About Me

Paula Barouh was born and lived most part on her life in Concepción, a big city on the south of Chile, searching since then for different ways to express herself, specially through music. She began to take singing lessons at 17, age in which formed her first band called "Icaros de Clep". In 1994 she arrived to United States as an exchange student, attending the senior year of "Chalmette High School" in the suburbs of New Orleans. Was on that city where she discovered the cadences of Jazz which lately became a trademark on her vocal style. In 2002, Paula got for the first time the chance to know the world of community radio stations, creating the radio show "INFILTRADOS", dedicated exclusively to Chilean rock. Was this radio show what brought her to host a TV show called "CORTENTRAMITE", transmitted everyday live by ABT Television and whose thematic was the live performance of Chilean bands. In addition to her hosting role, she performed as a singer doing an opening act in every show, playing with outstanding Chilean musicians from different bands. In 2004 an 2005 she continues her vocal studies in Projazz Academy with the singing coach Ana Maria Meza, and participates as a backup singer in the album "Plan maestro" by an important Chilean ska band call Santo Barrio. In 2006 Paula has her first contact with electronic music, collaborating with vocal melodies for bands like Ud. No and more recently with Reflejo, performing live in different clubs in Santiago , and recording the song Espejo. 2007 was the year when her solo project breakthrough: her first single "Convulsion" hits Chilean radio stations, and the video of this song gets into the Latin MTV rotation. At the moment she’s now promoting her first EP, BAROUH, five tracks full of dark melodies, intense ballads and crazy Drum and bass and industrial beats. ::ABOUT CONVULSION::: "Convulsion" is the name of BAROUH..s first single, produced by Jose Tomas Palma. It..s cadences refers to the industrial rock (Nine Inch Nails, Ministry) and to some recent bands like Prodigy or Marilyn Manson. The song mixes powerful riffs with electronic, aggressive and simultaneously dance-like sounds. This track is build around hard bits and dark harmonies, which generates an atmosphere of tension and chaos where the "vocal convulsions" of BAROUH are listened to. Peculiarly, this track is different from many of the guttural howls of the style: the artist whispers words and phrases in english throughout the song, with a convincing and seductive interpretation. The electronic beats, feeds the atmosphere of "no control" on one hand and of luxury by the other. The combination of violent sounds with a sensual vocal style gives an original mood to the piece and is a good example of a singer whom does look for a new proposal in this music genre. Certainly the melodic line of "Convulsion" does not shows her vocal range, but it's eloquent about her skills as an interpreter and creator in search of different and provocative proposals.
