About Me

Coming from a family of musicians, he was brought into the Asturian traditional percussion in 1987 by his brother Juan Carlos Varela, a well known piper, and the drummer Manuel Durán with whom he would later work in several musical formations, such as "Banda de Gaitas y Tambores de Lleoriu", "Tambor de L..Abadia","Lliberdón","La Viga Travesá", etc. It is during that period that he becomes a self-taught chromatic accordion player, which he will later replace with a "curdión de botonera", a variant of the instrument. In 1993 he forms the folk band "Llaimo" and later begins his collaboration with other formations such as "Folkgando", "Merlín" , "Sones Vieyos", "Los Llanzones", "Bandina L'Esturbín", playing in various festivals across Europe. He also cooperates with groups dedicated to the study and broadcasting of traditional Asturian music and dance, by helping them with the organisation of different activities promoting the Asturian cultural identity . Amongst these groups are "Muyeres", "Na Señarda", "Escontra'l Raigañu", "Vezos Astures", "Excelsior" and "Sulabarda". Since 1998 he has been teaching percussion and Asturian and bodhram drums at the Asturian traditional music school "La Quintana" in Gijón and from 2005 the "curdión de botonera" at the music school of Tineo, as well as dedicating part of his time to the reparation and reconstruction of popular Asturian instruments. He is currently a member of the band "La Bandina", one of the most recognised and requested in Asturias, having taking part in prestigious international events, such as the Intercéltic festivals of both Lorient and Provence, the 28th Fête de la Vielle in Anost, the Cornemuses d'Europe festival, all in France, Rua Viva in Portugal or Plasencia Folk (Plasencia), L' Intercélticu d' Avilés (Avilés), Nueches folk de Fitoria (Oviedo) , Granda (Gijón) and Tuña (Tinéo) in Spain amongst others. With Emilio Martínez Argüelles (drum and pipe) as musical partner, he was awarded the 1st prize of the "IX Concurso y Muestra de Folklore Ciudad de Oviedo 2001" (Oviedo, Spain) and as soloist he has recently won the 2nd prize at the Honner accordion international contest (Lorient, France 2006).
