At 9 years of age I got my hand on a guitar for the first time, and over the years I've run the stylistic gamut from John Denver to Kiss to Rush to a heavy fusion period to a purist straight-ahead jazz period and finally ended in the right place, which is the place of "everything". Along the way I spent some time in music school and did some very serious study of classical guitar, jazz improv, and theory and arranging. Eventually I ended up with a bachelors degree in classical guitar performance for my efforts (from Cal State University,Northridge)
I love music. I love creating with other musicians. I'm very fortunate to play with a lot of fantastic folks. Here's a list of some of the cool people I'm involved with:
CODE 3 , a trio of guitar, bass and drums. We've been playing together regularly since 1996, and creating with these guys has become second nature for me. The band features Doug Shreeve on Bass and Eric Wells on Drums, and all original compositions by Doug, my brother James, and myself.
BUG , a quintet featuring my brother, James Miley on Piano and composition (how lucky am i? get to play tunes with my bro! -----fun!), Peter Epstein on saxophone, Brian Hamada on drums, and Roger Shew on acoustic bass.
WE HAVE RELEASED OUR FIRST ALBUM!
YOU CAN CHECK IT OUTHERE
ALTERED , a really cool trio of the fusion nature, featuring John Flitcraft on Bass and Steve Holmes on drums. I've been playing with these guys for several years also, and it's always a blast for me to stretch out at an Altered gig.
INGA SWEARINGEN , an absolutely phenomenal singer who just floors me musically everytime we do a gig together. I also get to play a lot of acoustic guitar on her gigs, which I really love doing.
AXE, (pronounced Ashay) a group that plays traditional Brazilian music including; Choro, Samba, Bossa Nova, Frevo, Forro and Baiao. Led by flutist Bruce Gillman and includes Doug Shreeve on Bass and Richard Fultineer on Drums.
VOX LUMIERE , the brainchild of film composer Kevin Saunders Hayes, this is a massive multi-media extravaganza that features silent film with live music accompaniment. Too many people involved to list here, but just know that it ROCKS!
I do a little bit of teaching at CUESTA COLLEGE , which is a fantastic community college in San Luis Obispo with a really incredible music department. I'm really fortunate to be part of the team there.
