Music is about expression, if you need to argue with other people about what they listen to, you don't understand music. The common misconception on music, which is quite sad, is that what you listen to defines you as a person, so people listen to the mainstream, or what ever they are exposed to by their peers in a situation where they feel they will be alienated if they don't agree on others views. If anyone rips on you about your music, they are insecure about who they are as a person.
