“These songs are all about failure. Spectacular failure,†says A Dangerous Fiction mastermind Aaron Rom. “Failure in love, failure in life, failure in career, etc. I just wanted to vent my frustrations, and I wanted to find the most snide, sarcastic, self deprecating way possible.â€
Aaron’s music career to this point can be aptly described by the name of this project. “It’s a dangerous fiction for me to think I have a real career in music at this point,†he laughs. “However, this EP will change that. I hope, anyway!†And surely, as you listen to each of the 5 songs on this EP, you get the sense that Aaron knows what he’s doing. Confident without being cocky, the EP lays out the blueprint of the ADF sound. Mixing the ambition and drama of 70s progressive rock with the melodicism of 80s synth pop and the modern sensibilities of metal and electronica, Aaron forges a sound that pays respect to his influences while looking towards the future.
“I grew up in a very musical household,†says Aaron. “My Dad was a huge fan of Genesis and Emerson Lake and Palmer. Genesis’ Invisible Touch album had a huge impact on me. I was 9 when that album came out, and I remember being in awe of Phil Collins as a drummer, especially when he was incorporating the Simmons drums into his sound. He’s always been a huge influence on me as a drummer and as a musician.†And certainly, the drumming on The Right Words recalls Phil’s intensity. Aaron even throws in a nod to Phil on this track. “I wrote this song after getting some new studio gear that really allowed me to record this material somewhat properly. I wanted to make a nod to Phil as an influence of mine, so I threw in a variation of his famous ‘In the Air Tonight’ fill before the last chorus of the song as a tribute to him.â€
Elsewhere, you can hear Peter Gabriel’s influence on the epic ‘Case Study’, a dark ode to an old flame. ‘Simple Truth’ recalls Tears For Fears mastermind Roland Orzabal’s dark tenor against a backdrop of Synth era Rush colliding with Squarepusher. ‘Distance to You’ marries Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree to an anthemic 80s synth driven chorus. But, it’s in the bombastic and sarcastic ‘Spectacular Failure’ that Aaron feels best represents his artistic credo. “I wanted to purposely write a song that collapsed under the weight of its own ambition,†he says. “I wanted to find the most elaborate, convoluted way to say, basically, I can’t get laid, and do it against a backdrop of German Augmented 6th and Neapolitan 6th chords.â€
Smart with a necessary amount of humor and recognized pretentiousness, A Dangerous Fiction is a name to remember, and hopefully, you’ll find the right words to describe them.
