Hello friends!
Happy 2009!
2008 was a chaotic year in the world of music. Last year gave us bi-curious Katy Perry, a psychotic Britney, reunited New Kids on the Block, and the club hit, "I'm in Miami, Bitch!" Ah, so much to be proud of... On the business side Warner Bros Records and others went DRM-Free and Hollywood's historic Palladium music venue reopened after an extensive remodel.
Looking ahead to the next 11.5 months we can expect more change in what we hear and how we hear it. A year of change does not necessarily have to have a negative connotation, after all, a change in the President has been anxiously anticipated. These days there are only three certainties in life: taxes, death, and outrageous Ticketmaster fees. 2009 will surely go down in music history, if for no other reason than Michael Jackson is selling off just about everything he owns this April in a massive three-day auction; here is your chance to own the silver glove!
I heard today that one of L.A.'s most credible radio stations, Indie 103.1FM is now off the air. On their web site www.indie1031.com, there is statement that talks about how radio has been pushed to play more and more pop music in order to keep market share and audience ratings. Indie made the decision not "to play the corporate radio game." The good news is that Indie--with its founding principals of playing the best local and indie talent that deserves to be played--will continue streaming online 24/7.
Again we are reminded that we need to fight for our local musicians who refuse to change their art to make a buck.
I hope you all have a great year filled with incredible music!
