About Me

Donovan was blessed by the Creator with the opportunity to start spinning records professionally in 1986 and it has truly been his calling in life. He started off spinning at "The New Bar" in Madison, WI where he seamlessly alternated between vinyl and video and learned the ropes of working a dance floor. During his residency at The New Bar he was able to enjoy live performances by dance music luminaries such as Sylvester and Divine and at that time most of my music came from either the legendary Importes Record Store in Chicago or Vinylmania in New York. He was very fortunate to have friends who frequented the Paradise Garage at the time who would bring him records that Larry Levan was playing in heavy rotation. Donovan is deeply indebted to his friends who would bring him WBMX and WGCI mix tapes from Chicago featuring the likes of Frankie Knuckles and The Hot Mix 5. These mix tapes were in heavy rotation amongst his college buddies, so during his weekends off he would sneak down to The Power Plant and The Music Box to get his groove on.In 1989 Donovan moved to Chicago where he had a residency at "The Rage" for about a year during which time he was the opening dj for Grace Jones. In 1990 he started a 10 year residency at Roscoes Bar & Nightclub. During that time period Donovan maintained residencies at Shelter, Crobar, Kaboom, Lucky's, Eon's, Station and guest spots at Cairo and The Pyramid Room. From 2002 until 2007 Donovan did guest spots in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Chicago at several clubs including Club Boi in Miami and The Green Dolphin in Chicago. In July 2007 Donovan and his two partners Louis Lazu and Elias Zimianitis formed a collective called "The Araguaca Tribe (Araguaca is the Taino word for dance) and they began doing "Paradise Sundays" a monthly dance party featuring soulful house music and classics. Their parties feature uplifting and inspiring music, funky videos (classic Soul Train clips, fashion shows and campy clips), a very eclectic crowd and cheap drinks. Paradise Sundays now take place the last Sunday of every month @ Betty's Blue Star Lounge, 1600 W. Grand Ave. in Chicago, IL.
