About Me

MySpace LayoutsBamburgh Research Project is an archaeology project investigating the incredible past of Bamburgh Castle Northumberland, and its surrounding area. We run a training excavation every summer from mid June through to September (check dates on website) which is open to students from all disciplines and volunteers. www.bamburghresearchproject.co.ukThe project is run by a team of professional field archaeologists who work commercially in Northumberland and Yorkshire. We teach people of all abilities to use modern archaeological methods of excavation, recording and interpretation.Bamburgh Castle is a unique site. Recent discoveries have shown that the castle rock has been a focus of human activity for well over two millenia, and in 2006 flints and evidence of settlement has been unearthed revealing Bamburgh as a centre of prehistoric occupation. The site is best renowned as the centre of power of the Northumbrian Earls and as the seat of the ruling Anglo Saxon dynasty of Bernicia. It is the secular foil to Lindisfarne, Holy Island, and its rulers resonsible for the foundation of early Christianity in the North. The site itself is fascinating and full of unparalleled deeply stratified archaeology which is gradually being revealed each year by our team.We film all of the excavations and social history of the project and run a media work experience programme in collaboration with York St Johns college Film & TV course which offers hands on practical film making experience including use of different cameras and the opportunity to edit from our archive of over 700 hours of digital video using Final Cut Pro.
