BIO:
How does an apprentice become a master? It is his severe dedication, spartan discipline, and sedulous devotion that mark his graduation from a novice to a veteran. Although Asegun, professionally known as Ase, (pronounced Ah-SHAY) humbly assumes the rank of callow beginner, his musical vitae insinuates otherwise. He’s a product of Tallahassee Florida, and his musical training derives from his exposure to African drumming, which he has performed for over 15 years, traveling throughout the United States, Latin America and West Africa. Ase draws his inspiration from hip-hop's legendary east coast producers, but it is his deeply founded knowledge of the most ancient musical instrument, the drum, that enables him to transform soul into sound and embed emotion into vibration. As an experienced percussionist and academic scholar, Ase is definitely a musical phenomenon that will soon be ready to transition from "up and coming", to a towering figure in the industry.
Strongly devoted to increasing his proficiency as a mechanical engineer, Ase is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at MIT. His experience as a scientist and his expert technical knowledge as an engineer guide his meticulous approach as a producer. With the promise of a Ph.D., under the age of thirty, and an ensured position as an engineering professor, he contends, "I do this for the love, not for the dough. So, I'm only interested in working with artists that can make timeless music with my beats. I'd like to make money, but not at the expense of my integrity and musical values." Because of his intense studies as a scientist and producer, Ase gives a literal meaning to the figurative phrase, "In the lab."
Ase has been developing his craft for the last 6 of his brief 26 years, and has only recently decided to market his skills. A true minimalist, Ase only uses one piece of equipment; the MPC2000XL. Essentially, he formulates his style by manipulating samples to create beats that bear no resemblance to their originals. "I often chop samples in between beats in order to replay them as a different rhythm in another time signature," he says. Once the samples are programmed and tuned, he applies his natural ability by arranging sequences with his eyes closed. Ultimately, Ase makes more than beats; he creates symphonies that truly embody the essence of hip-hop. This young scholar/musician is definitely the “Unsigned Hype†of producers, and someone destined to fulfill grand expectations. As he steadily transforms from an apprentice to expert producer, Ase continues paying his dues until he is no longer a jack of all trades, but a master of one.
