I could be your band mate. If you need hand percussion, bass, mandolin or rhythm guitar, I am available. I am always interested in new and off beat projects. I have recently started a solo venture, playing guitar and singing original songs. I have also been a part of a number of different bands throughout the years. I played bass and sang backing vocals for Bad Intelligence. I have played mandolin and percussion with my friend Brent, billed as Swanson & Nichols or as Blue Sunday. I have slapped the congas with The Sinners Club. I have also permformed a number of limited edition gigs with a variety of artists, ranging in styles as varied as new age, jazz, calypso, hard rock, blues, folk, country and heavy metal. I don't care, as long as its got a beat that I can groove to.
I have recently started recording and performing shows with my fiance, Mary Wright . Check out her page to hear some of my percussion work. She is learning my songs as well. Look for new recordings of my music with Mary playing lead and singing backing vocals.
Influences: Growing up my father played a lot of folk artists like Jimmie Rogers and Woody Guthrie. There was also a good deal of bluegrass and old time country played. Dad played the banjo and guitar quite a bit when I was a kid. I didn't start playing myself until I was a junior in high school. By that point I was listening to a mix of blues rock artists such as Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, & George Thorogood; progressive artists such as Yes, ELP & Pink Floyd; classic rock in the form of The Who, Rolling Stones and early Elton John; early 80's rock in the form of The Police, U2, and Asia; and heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, and Quiet Riot. Another favorite is early Scorpions guitarist, Uli Jon Roth. I listen to and play just about anything, including jazz, classical and world beat.
Here are some cool movies about bands trying to make it big.
Sounds Like: I have been favorably compared to Tom Petty. The first time I was told this was from a friend on his birthday. He had five or six drinks in him by the time he heard me singing. He couldn't remember my name, so I wasn't sure about how valid the comparision was at the time. However, I have since been told the same thing by a couple of other friends who were quite sober. I don't know if I quite agree, but I like Tom, so I think it is a good thing. More recently I have been compared to the Violent Femmes, and a cross between Neil Young and Kurt Cobain.
