Band Members: Tina Glenn - Vocals
Influences: When I was a child, I had many influences, one of which was my mother. She was an awesome singer (and still would be if she would act right!)! I started singing in churches at three years old and she taught me everything I needed to know. She was Mom and vocal coach and I don't know which one she was tougher at! She taught me excellence at a very young age. I then got hip to vinyl and became immediately sprung on Andrae Crouch and the Disciples, focusing in on one disciple in particular -- Dannibelle Hall! She was fabulous and everything she did was from the heart, even something as small as "My Peace I Give To You" (from "This Is Another Day")! I miss her genuineness as a musician and a child of Christ. There's not been another like her. As the years progressed, I then became a true Hawkins fan, focusing in on the wonderful Tramaine Hawkins!! That woman's voice today is still like butter! I don't think there was one female singer back in those days (mid 70's, early 80's) that didn't want to be Tramaine! Tramaine taught me to sing behind the beat (check her out on songs like "Holy One" and "He's That Kind of Friend" -- she's behind the beat -- the music follows her) -- to lay back into the music if you will. I also learned from her to be open to God and to sing in that moment -- like it's your last time!!When I went to Oakwood College (SHOUT-OUTS TO ALL OAKWOOD ALUMNI!!!) I began vocal training, sang with a trio and the college public relations choir, the Aeolians! When I did that, another venue opened up for my liking, and while listening to the campus radio, I heard this smooth voice come across the airwaves and I couldn't move! His voice was better than butter, like cream, yet it was strong, rich, and simply wonderful. This man has a voice that is both gospel and operatic at the same time and I was instantly hooked!! I knew vocally that is what I wanted to achieve -- and so, I fell REALLY hard for Larnelle Harris!! To this day, he is my favorite. He is a clean, impeccible singer. Simply put, there is no one out there that is like him. He really digs deep when interpreting a song and is not afraid to bear his emotions in the midst of singing. You can tell that he simply doesn't sing on his own, he truly relies on the Holy Spirit for trust and guidance in every song, every audience and for him, it's not about trying to cross over, trying to be popular, but rather it's about each and every soul that purchases his albums and attends his concerts to really reach out and touch Christ. My last influence is of course, Barbra Streisand because in every attempt to perform, she makes each note perfect from beginning to end and for me songs like "People", "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were" just shine for me.From each one of the above, I have taken a lesson and adapted it into who I am as a person and a minister. It was never my goal to be just like any one of them, for I have learned that when we try to be JUST like others, we prevent God of perfecting the giant in us -- I have, however learned what I believe each one of them wanted me to learn about them and their music, whether for ministry or entertainment. I love to listen to old Disney music -- not the junk they put out today, but the songs from the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. It's perfect and beautiful. I also listen to Andy Williams -- what a seamless singer! Generally, I like the old music because today's music is sometimes kinda scary -- the older music keeps me grounded and my ear trained to accept only the best quality of music. So, you take what you need from musicians and move on, so that you can continue to grow. I learned a lot of techniques from each one of my influences, taking those and perfecting them according to Tina Glenn, going even to the tune of creating a number of my own! But because I am a person that enjoys growth and the need to grow as a musician and minister, I am a true advocate of KEEPING a good vocal coach and a good Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists -- to be without it a singer's worst nightmare! With the two, you can go VERY far! A good coach helps you to tap into other areas of music that you thought were unachieveable, while retaining the quality of your voice. A good doctor keeps the voice in optimal health. My prayer is for eveyone who comes to this site to simply be blessed by the music that they hear and that they can reach out and touch Jesus. That is the most important thing to me -- everything else is just gravy!!!Be blessed!!Tina G.
Sounds Like: I don't know WHO I sound like -- I guess I sound like me and only me! For me that's great because I want God to use me as an individual, not as a clone. God doesn't need clones -- that's why He never created them Himself. He could have but he didn't -- that should tell us all something -- God is happiest when we are the people He created us to be.
