MySpace Layouts She started her studies in music with the flute in 1979, when the conductor of the Amherst College Choir discovered her talent during his stay in Istanbul for the International Music Festival. She started studying piano in 1983 with the composer Ali Darmar, and the “State Artist” Aysegül Sarica. Meanwhile, she received her secondary school degree from the flute studio of “Nazim Acar” at Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory. Between 1985 and 1986, she furthered her studies in piano in Paris with Germaine Mounier. In 1990-1991 she continued her studies in London with the pedagogue Maria Curcio and her assistant Mark Swartzentruber. 1993 brought her prizes in various competitions. She received the third prize in the “Chopin Etudes” competition hosted by Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory. She was awarded the first prize for her interpretation of a Cemal Resit Rey composition entitled “Improvisation” in the competition held in honor of the composer. In that same year, she graduated from the piano studio of Judith Ulug at Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory In 1998, she shared her experiences with the students via the masterclasses she held at the Education Faculty of Uludag University in Bursa. While at the same time pursuing a career in piano, she developed a keen interest for the Anatolian culture and its local melodic colors. She started to study composition with Dr. Pieter Snapper to be able to bring a Western perspective on these melodies. Renan Koen believes that the most important mission of music is to unite and to heal. Following the call of this mission, the artist went to Athens and completed the “Art et Qualite de Vie – L’art en Prevention Therapie et Pedagogie” program, which is a member of the European Music Therapy under the instruction of psychologist-pedagogue and music therapist Lianna Polychroniadou. This has made her the only female Turkish member of “La Societe Hellenique du Musicotherapie et Expression Creative “ Mrs. Koen, is currently preparing various radio and television programs. At the same time she is performing both as a soloist with orchestras and chamber music ensembles and as a recitalist. Mrs. Koen has been working on her project “Interactions in World Music” with soprano Sebnem Ünal since 1993. This duo has performed the Turkish premiere of Federico Garcia Lorca’s “13 Spanish Folk Songs” and since 2003, joined forces with other distinguished musicians to form their ensemble “Melodias Epicas”
