About Me

MyGen Profile GeneratorAsk It Why was formed in 1992 as "SAD" by Vedat Kiyici (guitars) and Ozan Aktuna (drums). Influenced by European Metal and OI bands as well as american bands such as DRI, Dead Kennedys, Slayer, Bad Religion, and others, Vedat decided to play the music. After high school he bought himself a cheap classical guitar, and quickly figured out that this was not the right instrument. Nevertheless he learned to play his favourate punk hard core songs, and wrote the early SAD songs with this guitar. With a few unfinished songs under his belt and a desire to play HC, Vedat went on a mission to gather a band. In Akmar he met Ozan (optik) who was into the similar music with extra love for grindcore, especially for Napalm Death's "Scum" album. The duo's unconditional love for DRI's "Dealing with it" was the decisive factor in their choice of musical direction. They started their rehearsals in Atlantis studios, at Vedat's house and Ozan's grandmother's living room. Vedat was singing the songs and playing the guitar. They knew they needed a singer. In the mean time, then new now legendary Turkish bands, Turmoil and 2/5BZ, came up with DIY demo tapes which you could find in music shops such as Zihni. S.A.D. decided to release a demo as well. They recorded few songs in Ozan's Grand Mother's apartment in Pendik, Istanbul to present to Emre Sahin -then singer for the trash band Necrosis- and snatched him to become their singer. Ahmet, who later joined Ascraeus, played bass for shows. They had few shows with this line-up and recorded their first demo "Parental Advisory" at Atlantis Studios in 1993 (Vedat played bass for this recording under the name Fernando Mundoz). After this demo Emre went on to start his own HC band Radical Noise which later on became very well known. The band released this demo on cassettes with xerox copied sleeves. The illustrations were done by Ozan, and Collages were done by Vedat. After the demo was released, and with Emre's departure from the band, Ask It Why went on to find another singer and a bass player. They found a guy named Osman Coskun as their new bass player. They played few shows with him, one of them being known as the best Hard Core show that one could possibly attend back then: They were interviewed by the legendary Fan Zine "Laneth" and others alike. SAD was contacted by Luk Haas of Tian An Men records to participate and assist in his project, a compilation 7" vinyl of Turkish Punk-Rock bands: "Sevdasiz Hayat Olumdur". SAD participated with 2 songs from the demo. In between line-up struggle Vedat and Ozan joined up with Gokhan Ozoguz of the band "Athena" to play for a punk rock show at Gitanes bar sharing the stage with legendary bands like ikibolubesbeze, LSD, Dead Army Boots, CMUK, and others. They played Ask It WHY songs as well as new ones they wrote together. One of these songs was called "Anne bende para yok" was later on adopted by Athena as "Bazil" on their album "One Last Breath". Vedat wanted to write Hard Core songs in Turkish, and use some Turkish motives in the songs. This idea was deemed ridiculous by everybody in the scene. Against all odds Ask It Why wrote Hard Core songs in Turkish, which later on influenced others to do so.In 1995 Tayga Soysalturk joined Ask it Why as their new singer, and Ask It why went into the studio to record some songs for a possible album release that they got offered. The label(!) did not offer any financial assistance. Vedat had to sell his records and some of his gear to pay for the recording! Their money allowed them to record only a few songs that were not enough in length for a release. They convinced their friends "Radical Noise" to participate in a Split tape. Altough the label went amiss, later on in 1996 the tape was released by KOD music, with a serial number of 001! Since Vedat's departure from Istanbul to New York in 1995, Ask It Why has not been an active band. On September 18 2004, Ask It Why had a home coming gig at the Bronx in Beyoglu joined with Lifelock and Your Kingdom is Doomed. This was the first show in 9 years.Independent radio stations from all around the world have played Ask It Why songs. A lot of Ask It Why songs are also used in DIY compilations and trades to this date with or without permission. We support DIY.
