About Me

Dr. Grace Carroll has over three decades experience in research, assessment, training and program development with an emphasis in sociology of education, family, evaluation and diversity. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Sociology from Stanford University where she also received two Masters of Arts degrees, and her Ph.D. in Sociology of Education in 1975. She was the Associate Director of Research and Development for Howard University’s Center for the Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk, and, the Director of African American Student Development at U.C. Berkeley where she created programs and support systems for students to facilitate retention and graduation. Dr. Carroll was part of the research team that conducted a qualitative study that successfully supported affirmative action at the University of Michigan Law School. She is currently collaborating with a research team at UCLA in writing a book using these data. She has published an academic book on race and stress; Environmental Stress and African Americans: The Other Side of the Moon, and various research articles and technical reports in her areas of expertise. This handbook for everyday understanding of race and stress; M.E.E.S. and Me : Musings of a Mad Matriarch, is based on her first book and was published in December 2006 by Chandler/White Publications.
