JERRY BEEKS - BRONX SLANG (BAD MAGIC) Seems to be the case these days that a lot of underground mc's from across the shores are seeing releases on British Labels like Big Dada to Wall of Sound off shoot Bad Magic. Whether or not this is due to getting better exposure over here or not who knows anyway the two tracks are excellent fairly simple head nodders, nice rhymes and beats. Could easily see it's way onto a dance floor no bother. DJ Record Reviews

When Beeks is given a suitable musical accompaniment he kills it - check 'World Premiere' for a taste of how things should be throughout the album or the funky piano-based 'The Bu Ku Dinky Dow' which shows a lighter style that still holds up well. Generally, Touche gives Beeks some good music to spit over . Spine Magazine
JERRY BEEKS bronx slang a stompin floor filling hip hop work out... Kerfuffle
the perfect blend of the old and the new, UK and USA as well as vocal and instrumental tracks. Tunes from A Tribe Called Quest, Kenny Dope, Aim, Blackalicious, Freddy Fresh, Jerry Beeks and DJ Trax amongst others, as well as some of his own tracks of course, come together in a phat set with plenty of funk! Maybe BAD MAGIC wasn’t album to offer the necessary promotion, maybe BEEKS isn’t the biggest name to ever come from the BRONX but this album isn’t half bad. In fact it’s quite good. Looking back I can’t remember why I risked even a few $$$s on this album. I have no idea who BEEKS is, the PRODUCERs are all new to me now so they must have been at the time, idem the FEATs, ditto the SHOUT-OUTs and the coverwork doesn’t suggest anything particulary HHish. It must have been the HH titles like BRONX SLANG, MICROPHONE MINGUS, BLACK COP & CHECK IT OUT but then again it might have been the offer at the time. Anyway….chances are this CD is hiding in a USED CD STORE near you, and providing the price isn’t excessive, I’d definitely suggest you pick it up. It won’t change your life, neither musically nor lyrically, but it is good, honest, straightforward HH that only loses out for one reason: it is a little too predictable at times. The hooks are catchy but a bit forced, the production is good but safe, indeed there are all qualities for a very averagly good CD. I can see some HHHEADS wanting more originality but others will find everything they are looking for. I do hope he is still going (though the JERRY BEEKS.com site is definitely down) as he’s as good as most of the MCs out there right now. Those Two Words Music Reviews
Jerry Beeks is known the world over for his ability to paint pictures in his lyrics that come to life thru his music. This Bronx born Rapper/Producer is popular maily throughout Europe and Asia. Between providing sharp lyrics for a Beer commericasl in Australia, or the proper music for television shows in Finland, Mr. Beeks has stretched his range way past the park benches of the North Bronx. His influences stem from his early childhood years studying legendary Mc's and Dj's in Valley Park and his access to the early works of groups like The Cold Crush and The Jazzy Five from Castle Hill. He's currently in the process of writing a book about the life of the pioneer rapper T La Rock and his struggles with Russell Rush and the millions of dollars he believes he's owed thru royalties from his legendary single, It's Yours. But soon after working with acts such as Channel Live, Benny Boom(When he was a rapper), The Horn section of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Blues Old Stand, Shootyz Groove, Primo Gomez, The Propeller Heads, The Scratch Perverts, Plus One, Grand Master Jam, Rahzel, The Creators, Pete Blast, Dose Big and The Justice League Of Beats, The Wiseguys and DJ Touche, Down Town Ernest and two studio sessions watching KRS One which left me in awe! Beeks also appeared on numerous compilation albums and mix tapes throughout Europe featuring the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Biz Markie, Fat Joe and others. Jerry released his debut album The Crop Report on Wall of Sound/Bad Magic in 2002 with a rolling release throughout Europe and Imports distributed by Virgin Inc. in the United States in 2004. While in Negations with Kristi Clifford and Pepper Reyes to sign with the very exclusive Asti Ent.Group in New York City, Jerry felt the need to travel abroad returning to South Africa to aid The South African Liberation Movement and attend several lectures on the current state of Apartheid. Unfortunately, we haven't heard from Jerry since he first arrived in the region of Azania on March 8th of 2006. We contacted the NSA in early May to see if they could assist us in locating him. On May 15th the NSA reported one of there satellites had received a distress ping from his personal sidekick the day before. The ping was traced to The Germiston Railway station outside the Indian Province of Durban. Eye witnesses reported seeing a young man that fit his description who appeared to be traveling alone carrying only a duffle bag and walking with a severe limp as if his left leg had been injured in some way. Since that time, we've had no further report on his condition or location. With this year coming to an end, the concern for his safety grows with every passing day. We've posted some of the last songs he recorded in preparation for his second album titled, The Black Quarter Back. We will continue to live through his music and the many contributions he's made over the years to Hip Hop, and Humanity in general. If you have any information that may lead the authorities to finding Jerry Beeks, please contact the site immediately, or Jay Nice at Pariah Live Records.
