Jazz and world music have become essential components in today’s music scene and not just because they are continually popular and reach top spots in the charts (e.g., Diana Krall 2004 and Pat Metheny 2005). Both genres are also motors of development in popular music. Santana without Latin rhythms? Norah Jones without jazz ballads? Buddha Bar without tablas? Rap without scat? Sting without swing?
Many companies in the music industry, which appreciate the value of these two genres considerably and are especially dedicated in promoting them, have joined together in the association “Jazz & Worldpartners”. And they do not even consider each other as competitors in this highly competitive market, but instead are formulating common goals.
- Promoting sharing of information within the industry
- Analyzing the market and evaluating it for their own activities
- Promoting communication to music consumers
The association has developed important tools over the past years, which it is supporting and refining continually, e.g., the monthly jazz charts and the Jazz Award (for more than 10,000 sold CDs). They were created by “AK Jazz”, the predecessors of “Jazz & Worldpartners e.V.”, in 1993 within the German Association of Phonographic Business. This was converted into the association “jazzpartners e.V.” in 2003 and expanded to the present association in 2005. This association has expanded continually over the past years and is present with joint booths at all significant trade fairs in Germany and other countries in the meantime (MIDEM, WOMEX, PopKomm). These initiatives strengthen the presence of the member companies in Germany and other countries. Many other activities serve to achieve common goals: the compilation “Horvergnügen”, which appears annually for MIDEM, and collaborative ads. We are working on the establishment of an award and charts for world music too to communicate this tool via retailers to consumers. We also cultivate communication with other important participants in the market from the German Association of Phonographic Business to journalists and “German Sounds”. We are very happy with all that we have achieved till now and want to dedicate ourselves to the tasks of the future together. To this end, we also look forward to each new member, who would like to collaborate with us.
