808 Mistake was never really a band, just a back burner recording project. It started because way back in college I (Pea Hix) had put together a bunch of basic backing tracks for this rapper that never ended up using the stuff for anything. The tracks were made from samples of records I snagged out of the dumpster behind Rhino Records, the one near UCLA. Every Tuesday they would dump records and I'd go around and grab stacks of 'em.
Around 1998 or so I dug up these basic tracks and, thinking they were sort of worthwhile, I said to Rob: "You should rap over this stuff." Rob did 6 songs, not really rapping, but not really singing much melody either. His version of rap, I guess.
Well anyway we always talked about polishing this stuff up, doing more tracks and putting out an album sometime, but it never happened. And it's clear that it never will happen at this point, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is all the different samples that would have to be cleared and that costs alot of money. So here's the 808 Mistake stuff as-is. I'll rotate in the other 2 songs eventually.
I still have lots of basic raw tracks that Rob never got around to doing anything with, so maybe this could be a fun internet collaboration thing. If anyone out there thinks they gots skillz on the mic lemmeno and I'll send you a track and maybe you can become an honorary member of 808 Mistake, kinda like Wu-Tang or somethin...
