biographys
KYO
Kyo ( Nishimura Tooru ) (born February 16, 1976 in Kyoto, Japan) is the lead vocalist and lyricist of the Japanese rock group Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a roadie for Kuroyume [citation needed] and the frontman of La:Sadie's.
While he has only composed a handful of Dir en grey's songs, Kyo is responsible for all the lyrics, which touch on a wide array of subjects, such as sexual obessions ("ZOMBOID"), abuse ("Berry") and mass media ("Mr.NEWSMAN"). Several songs deal with specifically Japanese issues, such as the country's casual attitude towards abortion ("mazohyst of decadence") and its conformity-oriented society ("children"). The vocabulary used ranges from vulgar to timid, with wordplay and double entendres occuring frequently, often connected to the multiple meanings of certain kanji characters. [1]
His stage presence has reached a level of infamy, as it is not only very energetic and emotional, but also littered with shock elements such as full-body makeup resembling heavy burns, fake vomit of varying color and consistency and various acts of self-mutilation. However, the authenticity of the latter is not always clear, given how frequent certain practices occur, sometimes firmly in place within a tour's usual setlist. For example, Kyo would regularily engage in fish-hooking during the performance of "KODOKU NI SHISU, YUENI KODOKU." throughout the It Withers and Withers tour.KAORU
Kaoru ( Niikura Kaoru ) (born February 17, 1974 in Hyougo, Japan) is one of the guitarists of the Japanese rock group Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a member of La:Sadie's and Charm. [citation needed] He has composed most of Dir en grey's songs (at least up to the VULGAR album, at which individual credits for the music were dropped). His contributions display a fair amount of variety, ranging from slow ballads such as "ZAKURO" to upeat numbers like "JESSICA".Kaoru's signature guitar is the custom-made ESP Ganesa (now in its ninth version), though he also uses ESP Vipers, such as the D-KV-420. He also uses instruments by Gibson and Morris. His guitar sound relies heavily on manipulation, using feedback to produce screeching sounds or bizarre noises. The tempo of his solos varries strongly, similar to his compostions.
Trivia
Recently, both Kaoru and fellow Dir en grey guitarist Die have been seen with members of American rock band Wednesday 13, and both of them appear briefly in the music video for Wednesday 13's song, "Bad Things".SHINYA
Shinya( Terachi Shinya ) (born on February 24, 1978, in Osaka) is the drummer of the Japanese rock group Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a member of La:Sadie's. Shinya has composed a handful of songs for Dir en grey, his compositions alternating between melodic ("HOTARUBI", "FUKAI") and upbeat tunes ("raison detre", "umbrella"). Throughout his career, he has used drum kits by Ludwig, Yamaha and more recently Pearl.TOSHIYA
Toshiya( Hara Toshimasa ) (born in Nagano on March 31, 1977) is the bassist of the Japanese rock group Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a member of D+L and Gosick. [citation needed]Unlike fellow band members Kaoru and Die, Toshiya has only composed a handful of Dir en grey's songs, such as Erode and Bottom of the death valley. Unsurprisingly, his compositions tend to have a distinct, bass-driven sound. Throughout his career he has used bass guitars of several brands, namely Killer, Fender, Squier, Rickenbacker, Music Man and lately his own custom-made model by ESP.DIE
Die( Ando Daisuke ) (born December 20, 1974 in Mie, Japan) is one of the guitarists of the Japanese rock group Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a member of La:Sadie's.Die is the second most credited composer within Dir en grey (after fellow guitarist Kaoru) and his songs tend to be more upbeat, such as "304 goushitsu, Hakushi No Sakura", "WAKE" and "Mr.NEWSMAN". He also contributes all acoustic arrangements for the band's music. He has his own line of custom-made ESP guitars, the DDT and D-DR models, most of them in his signature color, red. During acoustic performances, he uses guitars by Morris.Trivia
Before the band dropped most of its Visual Kei aesthetics, Die, like the other members of Dir en grey, was known for his elaborate costumes, make-up and masks.
Recently, both Die and Kaoru have been seen with members of American rock band Wednesday 13, and both of them appear briefly in the music video for Wednesday 13's song, Bad Things.
Credited for additional vocals for the song "Sleep" by Plastic Earth, on their 2004 album S.E.A.M.-01.[citation needed]
One of his primary influences is guitarist Ichiro Takigawa of the band Craze. [citation needed]
BONUS!!
LA:SADIES
La:Sadie's was a Japanese Visual Kei band, and precursor to the Visual Kei/J-Rock band Dir en grey. The final line-up of La:Sadies was Kisaki (leader and bass), Kyo (vocals), Die (guitar), Kaoru (guitar) and Shinya (drums).History
Kyo and Shinya, who were friends since high school, were members of the band ?????? (Haijin Kurobarazoku), along with KISAKI. Then the three left Haijin Kurobarazoku, and formed La:Sadie's in December 1995, joined guitars Shio and Die. In early 1996 Kaoru joined La:Sadie's, and shortly after, Shio left the band. In their tour on Nagano, they met bassist Toshiya, who was in the band, D+L, at that time, and became good friends. The band officially broke up on January 15, 1997, and KISAKI went to join the band MIRAGE. It's said that, while Kyo, Kaoru, Die and Shinya wanted to go major, Kisaki wanted to stay indies. After KISAKI left the band, the remaining members wanted to continue playing, but were without a bassist. Kaoru took the duties of leader, and they remembered they were friends with a bassist from Nagano. Kaoru asked Toshiya, then of D+L, to join their band, he accepted and left D+L. The five members performed in Nagano as DEATHMASK. Dir en grey was formed on February 2, 1997, in Osaka.KISAKI is now the leader of Phantasmagoria.
Music
The band's musical style was typical 90's Visual Kei, with heavy influences from Kuroyume. Their songs were similar to Dir en grey's, except with Kyo having a much younger and higher voice, and the song structure being much simpler. A lot of their songs seem like a combination of 80s goth and hardcore punk.
