Robert Riegler, only european competitor at the first international “Solo Bass Competition” in Carolina/USA, did not show – this is what the homepage of the organizing body states in its report of the event. Something about a strike in France. But that is not quite the truth, or all of it. Austrias premier solo-bass artist did get there, if only minutes after the event, to which he had been invited along with three other contestants (chosen amongst 200 candidates from around the globe) had come to its conclusion. The strike-driven odyssey from Vienna to Myrtle Beach, the location of the contest, is a story of ots own.However, the assembled bass community did not want to miss out on the opportunity of hearing the Art Orchestra veteran perform, even after the contest. And so it came that the amp, schlepped to the occasion by jury member Steve Bailey in person, finally did get to blurt out “Reigla”s bass-notes. In the first row of listeners, at this aftershow party gig, from left to right: Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Anthony Jackson, Will Lee...A gig after the gig, that was considered by quite a few amongst the audience as worthy of top honors.
