About Me

….from the slopes of Mad River Glen ski area emerged a swirling sound, coalescing into an endless array of upbeat musical selections designed to keep the public swingin’, swayin’, pickin’ & singin’ & rockin’. Out of the deeps of winter came the WoodWarbler’s JazzGrass Show, first on 160-watt WMRW—LP-Warren, Vermont, our local community radio station at 95.1 FM on the dial back in July 2005. Two hours of jazzgrass eventually became 4 and then middling out to 3, still not much compared to filling 7 hrs a day, 5 days a week up on the hill for the skiing public. The WMRW show now airs Sundays 4-7pm. Eventually, the sounds of bluegrass, jazz & the space between down the David Grisman > Django Reinhardt and way beyond continuum wafted into the ears of radio folks from elsewhere, resulting in the April 30, 2007 debut of a fully developed 2-hr version of the JazzGrass show on 930-watt WGDR-Plainfield, serving Vermont’s capital district at 91.1FM and the world at wgdr.org. Who could imagine a highly specialized chairlift operator’s job to bring about such a high level of radio broadcast sophistication! More about my humble history: After growing up in the suburban wasteland just Northeast of NYC, I escaped to Vermont by way of a tiny liberal arts college in a place called Marlboro. Post-graduation zgunrhe sent me on a decade of pursuing academic and occupational bliss chasing songbirds around various eastern U.S. forests (Downeast Maine, south Appalachian North Carolina & Tennessee, Michigan’s Upper Peninsular Hiawatha N.F, New Hampshire’s White Mts and the surviving remnants of Illinois’ broadleaf forests). Following a heartbreaking last summer of ornithological pursuits in 2000, I started down the slippery slope of sharing the intricacies of nature with others. I've environmentally educated thousands of visitors “seeking solace in nature” in the mountains of Vermont (2000-2004, 2007-2008) and New Hampshire (2006). When I’m not trying to save the planet as we naturalist folk perceive it, I manage the only fully functional ski lift MidStation capable of uploading as well as unloading (sometimes simultaneously!) along Mad River Glen’s Single Chair. A wildlife biologist by training and an research ornithology expatriate most recently become an experiential outdoor educator without many salaried options to choose from, I was about to start a teaching licensure program when Vermont's Dept. of Forests, Parks & Recreation made me an offer to be an interpretive naturalist that I couldn't refuse.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Musicians and bands! If you've got a recording you'd like to get on the air, please send a CD to: WGDR-Plainfield ATTN: Brian Aust/P.O. Box 336/Plainfield, VT 05667. While my show stays in the realms of bluegrass, jazz and the blender jazzgrass between, all material is welcome and will be added to the WGDR New Releases rack for all programmers to play. Otherwise? I'm always up for meeting open-minded, all natural, musically inclined REAL PEOPLE! Intelligent life everywhere including freaks, pragmatic antiquarians, empaths, artists, Deadheads, naturalists, ecologists, and optimistic iconoclasts are invited. Localvores? People intrigued by deep forests, Long Trails, snowy mountains, Manhattan adventures and strolls down Bleeker Street after dark. Folks who THINK DIFFERENTLY, embrace diversity and critically question societally constructed "reality."
