(2002) The Muse and the Product

Phluidbox: The Muse And The Product
Another more rhythmic work. In 'Pillow' rhythm skitters across the sound space with some notes. A tock added, ripples and light tones; a pause and then back fuller before the fade. An extended silence opens 'Adapr' before poppy rhythm with echoed key chords. About half way through a deep soft phut and eventually a melody and some electro shapes before a long silence ends.'The muse and the product' abstracts angular rhythms against an Asian-influenced melody, joined by a rhythm box midway and some fast tuned percussion before easing back to the odd angularity. Long wind-ish tones and a hollow bamboo percussion in 'Whent' with a rubber rhythm and guitar sample suggesting the Caribbean. Again a hollow melody that floats along the shaker percussion and bass of 'Nupercs' gaining a boppy rhythm and becoming looser and almost feral at the end. There is a groovy Hammond melody line in 'Barter' along with squiggles squelches and a bop-bop rhythm, perhaps some talking in the background. And then 'Ice sands of carpet' a lovely Asian influenced cycling percussion ending a very satisfying set.
(2001) These Found Habits EP, Spark Releases
Spark deliver a fine five track EP from Joseph Fitzpatrick, otherwise known as Phluidbox. Over the course of these five tracks Fitzpatrick establishes himself as a talented exponent of melodic electronica. The opening 'Early Rise' is simply superb, it's melodic echoes of early Techno are mirrored by subtly effected electro rhythms and a simple sub-bassline. 'Quanticion' slides in next with simple Oriental melodies giving rise to a DSP'd Hip Hop beat pattern reminiscent of Funckarma and Lusine ICL. The tempo is picked right up with 'Kinghosompt' a fluttering uptempo track carried by lovely chromatic percussion melodies. 'Fahleng' then drops down to midtempo territory with a sharp 909 pattern bringing an old school flavour. The ambient 'Khetahn Wake' closes things with various synths filtered through the mix as a lone bass note rumbles onward. An original collection of heartfelt electronica that's not to be missed. Recommended.
“Busily precise electronic music (…). For Fitzpatrick’s first release as Phluidbox, These Found Habits is very strong and should place him on the list of artists to look out for in the future.†Paul Lloyd. Igloo Mag.
“I am quite optimistic as I listen to the next release by Phluidbox "these found habits ep". This is a mix between harder Mouse on Mars stuff (the distorted layers of sounds that sound a bit like a my bloody valentine guitar and the lively rhythms) and a bit rougher Arovane. I also think of the dancier stuff on Suction records. On the other hand he also gets quite friendly and calm as he stops the beats completely in the last track. Very good debut.†René Malgraff. (2002) Alter 12'', Spark Releases
Debut on vinyl of American artist Phluidboxis a box full of surprises with broken rhythms, dubby atmosferes and enchanting melodies. His first work on spa.RK was the magnificient ep ‘this found habits ep’, a great collection of tracks where Joseph Fitzpatrick explored freely his brilliant sense of rhythm and the perfect construction of melodies. In this new work we can just say he is in the right direction of an evolution in his language and personalitiy. Devastating electronic dub, tunes full of breakbeats, clicks and bleeps. Definitely contemporary electronica.Limited to 400 copies, in 160 gr. vinyl and beautiful rough printed cover and sold-out long time ago!
(2004) Thos Grol, Alpha Cat Boogie Productions, Lxir Media
An album of ancient oscillations, experimental noise collage and both chill and excited rhythms make for the first entry by Joe Fitzpatrick to the 'alpha cat boogie' collective. This release is the sort of stuff most labels are afraid to pick up, and that is exactly why aCb felt it should be released.Just because it doesnt prescribe to the latest trendy IDM geometry of the moment does not mean that phluidbox's spiritually deep concoctions should be hidden. In fact, it gives more reason for us to behold in the beauty of true artistry in the metaphysical wave manipulation realm that both 'thos grol' and phluidbox reside.
