About Me

"Harmony Constant is the areas leader in original, heart felt, singer/songwriter artistry. Performing in the area for over 10 years this duo, made up of the husband and wife team of Mac and Cindy Jackson, is known to turn heads in any local they perform in. Their style ranges from story songs(such as Harry Chapin-esque) to Acustic Rock(the likes of David Gray and Michael Nesmith) and their harmony is without limit. Unlike many "party bands" to be found in N.E.P.A. Harmony Constant avoids the "Top Ten" songs that are constantly found on the radio. Instead choosing to delve deeper into any artist catalog to deliver a phenomenal rendition of their most influential songs.

Out of the list of breathtaking original songs Jackson has writen some that have stood out are:
Alone Again: This lively songs is sure to stick in your head as well as conjure images from references to Harry Chapin and MacGyver. There is a sense of loss that leans against the undeniable hope for the future. One of his most requested live.
Do Me A Favor (Patient Man Blues): This ballad brings a lump to the throat as we can hear the plea of a lonely man searching for his one true love and asking anyone to help him find her. The song grows in intensity and the bass line is well placed.
The Story of Us: This Chapin-esque story song tells the real life tale of how Mac meet Cindy at a Borders book store years ago. It smoothly tells the tale while reaching new levels of music integrity by shifting with the mood of the words. You feel like you've been through the experience with them. Cindy's harmony is strong and proves powerful during the overlapping bridge. She's in complete control all the way.
Meridian Avenue: Another great story song brought to life by telling the tale of The first home the Mac and Cindy shared together. Haunting at times, this tune paints such a picture one can hear the train in their back yard.
Down On My Corner: This song tells the story of the mistakes we make when we're young. Mac recalls an old man who tried to teach him guitar when he was a boy but gets forgotten when other things prove distracting for the young student. It's a classic tale of regret that will leave you appreciating what you have while you have it.
Fade Away: Losing friends never sounded so sweet in this emotionally intense song. Taken from a fall out had with a platonic female friend Mac wrote this the day he woke up and realised he wasn't angry anymore and actually missed his friend. The finger work on the acustic guitar fills in this song so well and makes it a favorite among the crowd.
I'll See Her There: This early song was co written with Jackson's old music partner and the darker minor keys make for a different song than the more uplifting songs Jackson would go on to write himself. It proves intriguing however due to the practicallity brought to it by Jackson's contribution and vocal range.
It's Alright: A new song that has already proven to be a classic. Jackson releases some of his anger towards those who try to be an expert about things they disagreed with two days before. The lyrics tend to be more poetic and less exact in this song and the chorus reaches deep into your soul and stays.
One can be assured when going to a Harmony Constant show that they won't be watching mediocre talent hopping around on stage to get attention. The music speaks for itself. For them it's not about fame or furtune but for the true joy of playing music that lifts the heart and mind. You'll go through the emotional range from happy, to sympathetic, to passionate and back to happy again. Every song is an adventure. Do yourself a favor and catch a Harmony Constant show ASAP."
As told by Mac:
For as long as I can remember I have always loved good music. My parents tell me that my cradle was placed over the stereo speakers:) My father introduced me to the work of Jim Croce and Paul Simon as well as others. I would lay on my bed and play all the songs from my record collection over and over until I learned all the parts.
Then around 1986 I watched my first episode of "The Monkees" and was instantly drawn towards Michael Nesmith. I immediately connected with his humor and when I heard him sing I discovered a new level of music appreciation and depth. I realized this is something I had to do for the rest of my life. I was hungry for more and through my father's suggestions and my own search I found the other music that would change my life and influence my career. Everything from Harry Chapin to the Everly Brothers. From Simon and Garfunkel to David Gray. I knew from watching those Monkee episodes that I wanted to learn guitar and try to be a "working musician" and I started to take lessons...until my guitar teacher split.
Through the years as I learned more about the differences in music style and technique I started to write songs...at least the lyrics since I couldn't read tabs or let alone sheet music. After hearing me sing in the lobby of the office building we were both working in the local "Piano Man" Lee Strubeck asked if I wanted to sing with him at various venues around the area. It was great! Getting to sing somewhere every week and have a loyal following who were teasingly nicknamed "The Mac Pack" was very crucial in honing my performing skills. I also met my friend Pete who was trained in classical guitar and we started to perform under the title of "Folklore". I made the choice to start guitar lessons again so I wouldn't be dependant on anyone in order to perform plus be able to put music to all the songs I would write.
Then on a trip to a Borders book store I met the woman who would be my partner in life and music. Cindy had been another singer since childhood. Taking piano lessons and singing whenever she could. She is proud to say that she was a total 80's hair band chick. Big hair, posters wallpapering her room, the works. Besides the rocking tunes that everyone noticed she picked up on the great harmony of bands like White Snake and Poison.
As we were flirting and I was working up the courage to ask her out she told me about the previous bands that she had been part of and that she had just come from practicing in the back with her current band. I asked what songs they did and she said "We do a Mike Nesmith song". I hugged her tight in my arms and looked up to thank God. I knew I found my soulmate and the woman I would marry. The next day I played "Harmony Constant" for her and was blown away by the harmony she added plus our voices matched up perfectly. Cindy has the ability to instantly find the perfect harmony to any song she hears as well as belt out a mean solo on her own tunes.
She is much more likely to accept "unique" styles of music and I tend to be more of a music purist. We are always learing from one another. Hopefully you'll agree it works for our music. After Pete left the group we thought it was only natural to call ourselves "Harmony Constant". It explains us pretty well.

Band Members: Mac Jackson & Cindy Jackson
Influences: Ok, The first thing to understand about our influences is that the common bond between them is the complete sincerity in their performance. No matter how many times they sing the same song you can tell they allow themselves to let their music take over their whole being. One of the other things is that they are total professionals. They raise the bar in any area of music they explore. Please take the time to look for any and all music, video and articles of these amazing people. You'll see what we mean. Ask us if you need any suggestions. OK, Here Goes:

Michael Nesmith: Whether with the Monkees or on his own he can do no wrong. He is our favorite because we truely adore everything he has ever sung. He could sing the phone book and he would give us chills. He has an unlimited range with not just his voice but his imagination. He is also just as impressive at everything else he has been invoved in whether humor (he and Richard Dean Anderson are the two funniest people we have ever known of) or producing movies, or writing intellegent novels...even just to hear his intellegent thoughts in an interview. His list of achievements just goes on and on while at the same time he remains incredibly humble. He is a man who is not content with resting on his past accomplishments and always on the lookout for "what's next" in his life and music. His catalog of music is so wide and diverse that there is something for everyone. He is truely a treasure to the world.

Harry Chapin: The worlds best story song writer. His songs are always so moving and intelligent. They take you through a wide range of emotions all in one song. Listen to any of his songs and you will be better for the journey. He made sure that the notes matched the emotion of the words that he was singing about. He always sang with such passion and honesty. He was also an exceptional human being who didn't waste a moment of his star power. He was constantly on the search for ways to make the world a better place. Truly an insperational person who believed "Where there is life, there is hope" and "When in doubt-Do Something!" With his passing not only does the world miss out on more great music but it is truly and noticeably worse off as a whole.

David Gray: Someone who doesn't get played enough on the radio for our taste. His lyrics are so poetic and his melodies are so strong he is definitly an original performer. His style gives the sense of being very raw and organic, usually driven by guitar or piano, while still in control. The power of his voice and conviction can be heard through all his songs and tie all of his diverse styles together.

The Everly Brothers: Pure Harmonious perfection. They can sing anything and create a sound that can only be explained as a "Third Person". There is no studio magic involved just pure control and energy for their music. They have influenced everyone from Simon and Garfunkel to the Beatles. They sound just as strong today as they did when they started.

Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel (Together and Solo): I always feel "artsy" when I listen to their stuff. Like I'm learning about people and the finer things in life through their lyrics and performance. They have the wonderful ability of knowing when to have harmony and when not to. I know people strive to copy there style and sound but I have yet to hear it.

The Mamas & The Papas: Fun stuff. The songs have such a unique and complex arrangement of the harmonys and are so exciting to sing.

Jim Croce: He never had time to write a bad song. I always think of him as having two distinct styles, slow and pretty love songs and rocking, fun, fast rythm songs. His early stuff with his wife Ingrid is also amazing. He had a way of singing that made you know he was honest in his words.

Edie Brickell: Very unique voice and style. Her stuff with New Bohemians is more ruckus rock and her solo stuff is more singer/songwriter. She gets better with every new album.

K.T. Tunstall: She is everything we look for in a female singer/songwriter. Her style is a combination of Edie Brickell, Vicke Peterson of the Bangles and David Gray. She can write everything from slower, moving songs to powerful rockers that stick in your head. Above all she is a sweet, honest and fun person who is an insperation to anyone in the spotlight. We can't wait to hear what comes next.

The Bangles: The perfect blend of harmony and pure, fun rock and roll. Smart lyrics and a nice mix of all the girls singing lead. Their latest album is their strongest yet.

Sheryl Crow: One of the rare treasures found in the 90's music scene (other than David Gray). Other than her great voice she has such a great ability to write songs arranged with multiple layers for the instraments instead of just one dimentional dittys. Her first album had some catchy songs on it but she hit perfection with all her albums after that and hasn't looked back.

John Denver: I was like everyone else when I was a kid and had no interest in John Denvers music. I heard it was touchy-feely crap and wan't thrilled with other peoples versions of his songs. When he died the news played a clip of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and something changed. I wanted to hear more and I thank God I did. Most of his stuff (only the last few albums in the 80 lacked. They got preachy) has the purest, most sincere and organic stuff you can hear. Besides the "classic" radio played songs, his other songs are just as powerful and fun. He had such range and talent. His voice had a pleading quality to it.

Alison Krauss and Union Station: From the moment I listened to a tape someone lent me I knew I was hooked. I recomend anything by them together or solo. They each have a very powerful and controlled voice and are amazing musicians.

Melissa Ethrridge:(More Cindy than Mac) Pure, raw emotion with a powerful voice and energetic guitar work.

Billy Joel: To me he has 3 phases to his recording career: the early singer/songwriter stuff where the piano is the predominant instrument, the early-mid 80s Doo-Wop throwback stuff and the more recent heavy beat rock out stuff. My personal favorites are the singer/songwriter stuff and the heavier rock stuff. Hears hoping there will be more. It would be a shame if that were it.
Sounds Like: Hopefully enough like those who influence us and yet original at the same time.

Way before we even met we started performing songs that mattered to us. You know, the songs people should hear from great artists as opposed to the couple that are on the radio. We continue that motto together when we do someone else's songs, though we usually perform our original songs. We don't want to be a cliche and play only the songs that everyone knows and has heard so many times before.

We want to expand the listeners' horizons to the wonderful catalogs of so many wonderful artists and hopfully with our own material. Unlike some others, we are not into this for our own ego or for childish attention. To us, it's the music that matters most.

It's not about theatrics, gimmicks or shock. You would sooner find us performing in coffee houses and book stores as opposed to jumping around trying to shock people. Our music is the kind that you need to sit and pay attention to instead of dance and ignore the words. We want our music to move people and lift their spirits. We try to be our worst critics and always strive for perfection.

Our style is a combination of, but not limited to, Folk/Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Country/Rock and Story Songs. If you enjoy our influences then we think you should like us. We feel we have the right combination of harmony, intelligent lyrics and catchy melodies to make it worth your time. We hope to soon have up some clips of songs from our upcoming album. Thanks for taking the time to read this:) Mac and Cindy Jackson
