The Suns of Ra have been forging their own fresh brand of rock and roll since 2006. That year, the Denver, Colorado trio shelved a previous project in favor of a new name and musical direction. Then in late 2007, they cut the basic tracks for their debut EP, “Rock and Roll Soundsâ€. Their EP garnered praise from a feature in the Onion’s A.V. Club, and in addition, Suns of Ra have also gained a local reputation from their outstanding live performances that draw in audiences wherever the band appears. Their long-awaited first full-length album is expected out in early 2009.
Fusing together their own unique style of rock, Suns of Ra have built a diverse catalog of original material with something in their repertoire to satisfy almost any music fan. In each performance, psychedelic rock songs sit amongst bluesy shuffles, catchy pop songs, grave-digging heavy riffs, and a ballad or two. Suns of Ra have a positive lyrical vision and a good-time vibe that lifts the rafters on every venue they play. A Suns of Ra performance includes classic songs from other artists; they put their own stamp on both popular and lesser-known tunes by everyone from Cream and Black Sabbath to Muddy Waters and Hank Williams.
Dorian Cornwell (drums/backing vocals), and Dave Myers (vocals/guitars) found an instant spark when they first jammed together in the Spring of 2004, and found a shared interest in styles of music ranging from blues and jazz to metal and country. They didn’t complete the package until Abraham Willock (bass/backing vocals) joined them later that year to form the nucleus of the band. The ensuing two years found them searching for their own unique sound and trying several lineups with other players before returning to the trio format in Fall 2006 under the name Suns of Ra.
With just two old-style tube amps, a bass, a guitar, a drum set, and their own voices, Suns of Ra have introduced a new and vibrant sound with a classic feel.
