Influences: Witnessed Live:
Lords of Acid | My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult | Dink!
(Nautica - Cleveland, OH 1993 or 1994)
Canton, OH local music scene YMCA, North Canton Park - | Whatever | Superfly | Chris Sands' Random bands | Jettison Charlie | (I'll think of more)
Whatever (Cleveland, OH) Phantasy x2 and some bar in Massillon, OH
Anti-Flag | No Use for a Name (Cleveland, OH - Euclid Tavern)
Anti-Flag | Bouncing Souls (Cleveland, OH)
F.Y.P. | Beatnick Termites (Cleveland, OH) - Euclid Tavern (met sean from F.Y.P. in the McDonald's bathroom across the street - he got me and my friend joe in for free, then Pat Termite bought us a 6 pack of Budweiser).
F.Y.P. (Cleveland, OH) Phantasy and some other bar down by the flats where I stuck my head inside a hole in the door behind the stage b/c they we're already playing | Mesa, AZ - forget the underground place's name - Todd told me it was their last show ever (but, I guess they played one after that in Cali) - some girl timed the show and said they played for 17 minutes.
Enon (Modified Arts Gallery - Phoenix, AZ 2002?) I never got to see Brainiac :(
One Be Lo (Round Midnight - Boulder, CO 2005)
Mastodon | Against Me! | Cursive | Planes Mistaken for Stars (Fillmore - Denver, CO 2006) - missed planes, they went on at like 6:30...HR from Bad Brains came to the show - then...
HR (Three Kings - Denver, CO 2006) HR played the after show party - Mastodon, Against Me! and Cursive all showed up to hang out
Planes Mistaken for Stars | Avail (Three Kings Tavern - Denver, CO 2007) Everytime I've seen Planes, they just hit it, hard - so it was pretty inspiring to see them open for Avail, b/c they hit it extra hard and then Avail came on and were awesome - fun ass show.
PMFS (Club 126? - CU Campus Boulder, CO)
Dierks Bently (Fillmore - Denver, CO 2006) I got kicked out of this show b/c my friend Mandy got in a fight with this tattoo'd girl that I had been talking to earlier in the night and when security pulled them aside after the fight, (this girl punched Mandy and Mandy then ripped her necklace off) I was calling the tattoo'd girl out for starting shit and lying about the situation - I wouldn't stop going on about it, so they kicked me out and went to hang out outside the gay bar across the street - tattoos definitely do not make you hardcore.
D.I. (Mason Jar - Phoenix, AZ 2000) Awesome show and glad I got to see them live - except there was a skinhead jock there trying to have a pit all by himself and he was just running around blasting people.
Fu Manchu | Rival Schools (Mason Jar - Phoenix, AZ 2002) Loudest show ever
The Cramps | Detroit Cobras (Nita's Hideaway - Tempe, AZ)
Man or Astroman? | The Mooney Suzuki (Old Nita's Hideaway (outside) - Tempe, AZ 1999) The old second guitarist for MoAM got up on his stack on the first song and when he kicked in, he jumped off in one of the sweetest moves ever - then they had the flaming theramin and the electric thing that shot bolts out at everyone in the crowd.
Man or Astroman? | Zero Zeros (Old Nita's Hideaway (inside) - Tempe, AZ 2001?) The Hives opened for Man or and were awsome. I took video of both sets if anyone is interested.
Money Mark (Old Nita's Hideaway (inside) - Tempe, AZ 2002) He and his band were pretty funny. I think the drummer was the dude in the beasties vids for the mixup album. He could do the beat to Devo's cover of Satisfaction so perfect
Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion | The Liars | Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Old Nita's Hideaway (outside) - Tempe, AZ 2001 or 2) I freegin missed the yeah yeah yeahs b/c the paper had the time listed wrong... (didn't know them at the time, but I make it a point to see every band at a show). The Liars were noisy - the blues explosion kicked total ass, Russel Simmins had this things he would hit at certain times that was the most kickin bass drop ever - he is my second favorite drummer ever (George Hurley).
All Tomorrow's Parties 2003 - Curated by Matt Groening (The Queen Mary Boat / LBC Bay Park - Long Beach, CA) 2 day show - This was one of the best shows ever for me...Minutemen Duet was the best set I have witnessed, period. The Queen Mary stage was on the bottom floor of the boat and there were 3 levels total - the whole place was packed and I swear everyone was pumping there fist and singing along. What made it crazier was that my head (as I'm sure other's heads) was filling in all the guitar parts that weren't there - sad but totally awesome. I told Mike Watt thanks for the show. I met Ed Templeton walking to Modest Mouse and the picture I have in my mind was Sonic Youth at the end of the night - Lee and Thurston were on opposite ends of the stage with their guitars over their heads spinning in circles of feedback - Jim O'Rourk was with them at that time. Full Line up:

Modest Mouse (Old Nitas Hideaway, Outside - Tempe, AZ 2001) So this is one of the stranger experiences I've had. My wife and I went to this show and it was like a week after 9/11 and Modest Mouse comes on stage and Isaac Brock says "We're destructionists, not terrorists" then they start to play with a video screen behind them playing video of buildings collapsing, but in reverse, so they were going back up, which was powerful enough of an image, but the whole set, planes were flying overhead b/c the show was right under the pathway to the Phoenix Airport. Super power thought provoctions. (I know that's not a word).
Medeski, Martin and Wood (3x) (Phoenix Theatre - Phoenix, AZ 2002) My wife had known and seen these dudes for a while, and this was my introduction. They play two 2 hour sets and had DJ Logic with them, spinning in b/w sets. 2nd time I saw them was at a radio station's Edge of Jazz concert (Hollywood Bowl). They played for 45 minutes...when it was over, it was kinda like, oh, hey, their done, I guess we should leave now. Then saw them 2007 (Fox Theatre in Boulder). Another 4 hour show - then, I took a drum class from Billy Martin the next day. I like these cats a lot b/c they play good music and are so prolific - they keep putting out mmw albums and solo albums and side projects and Billy Martin started Amulet Records...
Speedy J, Terry Mullen, Soundbionics, Gel-O (Cervantes - Denver, CO)
Comets on Fire (51 Buckingham Gallery - Pamona, CA)
U2, PJ Harvey (America West Arena - Phoenix, AZ) I used to work Diamonback baseball games selling mocha freezes and through the same company worked at this show, selling big ass cookies in the seats before the show. I ended up trading 3 big ass cookies for 3 ticket stubs, so me and my friends could get to the floor - good show. U2 played the first song with all the lights on.
Sonic Youth (El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles, CA) SY closed a film festival. Came to show after a day at x-games, where I was writing for a magazine - got tix from this girl in trade for pizza money. Saw J Mascis walking into the show and I was like "hey there's j mascis". Met the singer from Jimmy Eat World at the show and talked to him (I had just moved from AZ) and I think Zach De La Rocha was there, but don't know for sure. This was the first time I saw them, they opened with Rain on Tin - and played Teenage Riot, I was happy.
Sonic Youth | Mike Watt and the Secondmen | Wolf Eyes (The Ogden - Denver, CO) In line waiting to go in I saw J Mascis and I was like "hey, there's j mascis" and my friend byron was like, "dude, don't be a dick" and I was like, "but, it's j mascis". He was opening for Modest Mouse at the Fillmore the same night...every single I have seen sy, j mascis has been there...he is like the ghost of sy or something.
Mike Watt and the Missingmen | Rose Hill Drive(Boulder Theatre - Boulder, CO) New Year's show - Rose Hill did a cover of the Band of Gypsys set before midnight (awesome), but Watt and the Missingmen opened for them and just totally absolutely ripped. I don't wish on anyone to ever play after Watt and the Missingmen
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Ogden Theatre - Denver, CO 09/27/2008)Super classic show - 7 musicians - 2 drummers - heavy
tbc...
