Who am I is the question. My answer is a man who has been taught that he is one of " thosepeople", an ethnic minority. A label that has branded me with negative connotations in some societies.Oppression followed by depression has fueled my fire. A passion burns inside me to beat the odds ofthe sociological perspectives of being submerged in poverty and held down by crime. When peoplesee me, I am looked upon as a giant who has just been released from the "green mile", the long stretcha person on death row walks down. My appearance, however, is very deceiving. I am a much morecomplex being than what can be captured by one's eye. What can I say to describe myself when I've been taught that the perception of others iswho I am. Simply put, I am a sensitive person filled with compassion for others. Attempting to fit inwhere diversity is only mentioned but only reconized in the minds of few. Nevertheless, the results of my endeavors have been limited.I am evolving everyday not knowing my outcome. As the days go by, I think of myself as acaterpillar encased in a cocoon awaiting my day of my release into the world. I will showcase a beautythat was once hidden because of an incomplete process that society thought was finished. I am a pieceof metal being forged in the fire and hammered upon, but feeling no pain as I am shaped by societywaiting for the completed product.
The finished product that I am striving to be is a spiritually grounded individual who will be ablessing to others. One of my ultimate goals is to become a teacher who relates positively to everystudent fulfilling all of their academic needs. Sharing wisdom and compassion will also be a majorcomponent of my teaching strategy. Another ambition is to obtain a master's degree. Being veryinterested in sociology, I plan to further my studies in that field. Perseverance will be my co-pilothelping me to reach all of my desires.I am more than what my appearance may convey to some. I do have hobbies. Ienjoy weight training and playing basketball. These talents are just precursors to my innate abilities.Composing creative writings of various themes, writing music, and being resourceful are also part ofmy multifaceted capabilities, and I am continuously growing. In time, I will become a finishedproduct, but for now I am still laying the foundation that will not be based on the perceptions of others.
