In a time of overproduced and overdone vocalists, it is rare that one hears the clear vocal sound that can stretch the boundaries from Classical, R&B, Jazz, and today’s Neo-soul. Nova , D.C. Native, and AMDA (American Music and Dramatic Academy in NYC) graduate, has always had music, dance and theatre a part of her life. She’s had her gift from birth. As a child she experienced her mother’s success with the Gospel recording group, Roberts’ Revival. This inspired a young Nova to imitate her favorite R&B, Pop, Jazz and Soul singers. This background, along with her classical training, allows her to cross over genres of music as a vocalist. Giving her the opportunity to work with artist like Stevie Wonder, IMX, Will Downing, Freddie Jackson, Ashford and Simpson, Yolanda Adams, Hezekiah Walker, Karen Clarke–Sheard and others. Nova is currently touring the world as a background singer for the incomparable Roberta Flack. She is also in the studio working with Ms. Flack on her new CD entitled “Roberta Flack presents Real Artists Symposium.” Nova has studied with the best, specifically under Leon Roberts, Derek W. Campbell, and Donna Reid’s tutelage. Nova has also graced the stage in musical theatre. Her most recent accomplishments involve her performance as “Effie Melody White” in Dreamgirls, which earned her 2006 Barrymore Award nomination for best lead actress in a musical, at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia. Nova’s musical theatre background involves a 2004-2005 tour with Leiber and Stoller’s “Smokey Joe’s Café”, “Ain’t Misbehavin”, “Black Nativity” and Malik Yoba’s “Acoustic Chocolate.” Recently, Nova was honored to be the voice behind the recording for the National Council of Negro Women, singing the words of Mary McLeod Bethune’s Legacy. Her latest recording Christmas in Harmony Volume 1, is an interpretation of classic Christmas carols. Nova’s up and coming LP shows off her vocal expertise in songs colored with a mixture of R&B, Pop, Inspiration and Jazz. Nova has tapped into an original sound. Now the world will know such a rare find.
