About Me

Bill Cardinal has been writing and performing in San Diego since 2006 with an outlaw country style and DIY method. Influenced by figures such as Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, and Townes Van Zandt; Cardinal shuns the Nashville pop sound and pulls off both the comedy and tragedy of old country music with a modern tinge. In February 2009 he played his first show with The Canyon Band behind him, and released a six-song EP entitled “65 More Miles” on 10” vinyl in May. With a growing fan base Bill Cardinal and The Canyon Band are hell bent on continuing the classic country tradition.

"...the music found on his 10-inch vinyl EP is some of the most in-your-face country-rock that San Diego County has heard since the death of Country Dick Montana in 1995.Like Montana's Beat Farmers, Cardinal plays songs with plenty of country twang to them ---- then lays them down atop a beat equal parts rock 'n' roll and Western swing, singing them with a punk swagger..."
-Jim Trageser North County Times
"Who knew a San Diegan could pull off such charming honky-tonk? I’ve never seen Cardinal live, but I’m guessin’ it’s a good time."
—Kelly Davis SD City Beat
"Finally, already past eleven, the man behind the whole show, Bill Cardinal, and his Canyon Band took to the stage. Americana/Country music has seen a reemergence in recent years, and an acceptance in the indie music community... Cardinal is not alt/country, or freak-folk, or any other modernized mutation of old Americana music. This man dresses like a cowboy, sings like a country star of old..." - Melodygeek.com

Sounds Like: The golden age of country music lies between the day Hank Williams met Audrey and the day Waylon kicked his coke habit. About that time, Nick Cave, Levon Helm, and Townes Van Zandt traded lines in a trailer in Chihuahua, Mexico, and lived on Hag, Buck ,Bob Wills, and made it to the theater whenever a Sam Peckinpah movie came out. Of course, one can't survive without a little Cash in the pocket.
