Who are the Canadians for Kyoto?
The Canadians for Kyoto is a non-partisan coalition of individuals, businesses, labour unions, environmental agencies, and communities who support Canada's recommitment to the Kyoto Protocol and challenge all levels of government to implement policies that will respect international law.
What is the Kyoto Protocol?
On February 16, 2005, the Kyoto Protocol officially entered into force, marking an important step forward in the fight against climate change. It is the first, and only, binding international agreement that sets targets to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.
Why Rally for Kyoto?
Although 165 nations have ratified the treaty, the US and Canada, which account for over 30% of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions, have not honoured the terms of the agreement. The Canadian parliament recently passed Bill C-288 which gives the government 60 days to set forth a plan to meet Canada's Kyoto obligations. Since both the previous Liberal government and the ruling Conservatives have stood against the Kyoto Protocol, the rally is a show of support for an official, legitimate plan of action to meet Kyoto targets.
When is the Rally for Kyoto?
On Sunday March 11, 2007 at 12pm people across the country will unite and rally for Canada's recommitment to the Kyoto Protocol. The rally will feature a wide range of speakers from environmental organizations, green businesses, and the government. Musicians, entertainers, writers, and journalists will share their thoughts and concerns regarding Canada's failing environmental record and inspire Canada to be a world leader in environmental policy instead of a violator of international law.
