Profile GeneratorThis Atlanta based band has everything: melodic yet intense vocals, virtuoso guitars, and aggressive drums.
Smugface appeals to listeners of all spectrums in the tradition of Pantera, Metallica, Tool, Helmet, Dream Theater, Faith No More, Ministry, and Primus. Fans of metal, alternative and rock music enjoy the high energy, heavy grooves, and songs that combine melodic hooks, harmonies and personally reflective lyrics. (Dick B, Peoplesound.com)The band formed in early 2000. All members of Smugface had previous bands and musical projects which prepared them for this crowning musical achievement. Founding members Adriel Garcia and John Whitney grabbed Tim White from another band, forming the genesis of Smugface. In February vocalist Elliott Sharp became a member after meeting the band and joining an impromptu jam. In March, Elliott chased Bassman down in a parking lot after hearing about him from a music professor. He continued to rehearse with the band, not speaking a word, thus the name Bassman. The band adopted the name Smugface.Smugface caught the attention of producer Rick Beato, guitarist of Universal recording artist Billionaire. Beato produced their demo, recorded in late June at Coda Studios with engineer Rusty Cobb. The demo includes three songs: 'King of Your Own World', 'Punish Myself', and 'Paintbrush'.Smugface played a series of dates in August and was featured with Flip/A&M/Geffen recording artist Cold at the Dark Horse Tavern on September 6. Cold front man Scooter Ward became a Smugface advocate and helped to spread the word to such people as Fred Durst who almost signed the band. Smugface played popular Atlanta venues including The Masquerade, The Hanger (The Strand), Nine Lives Saloon and The Opera House.Smugface launched their MP3.com web site in November and climbed the charts with their three songs reaching peak positions of 3, 5 and 7 respectively in December on the Alternative Metal charts. Later in December, the band signed with music attorney Reid Hunter of Serling Rooks & Ferrara, New York, selected BMI for royalty services, and Hired Local manager Russell Carter.Smugface went on to do 3 more demo's. Demo 2002 included Essence of Love, Shuttle and Diffused... on the Gate. This demo was more refined, and confident, getting them loads of attention and cred among the local scene. The next being only a single song 'Walkers Ridge' with producer Glen Matullo at Orphan Studios. This was smugface's most delicate song to date, recorded only with acoustic guitars and vocals. Their final release was the Interim Release 2003, which was a home recording featuring a signature blue "prototype" cover, and a whole new melodic overtone. It was an obvious giant lead forward for them as musicians and writers. This demo included 'Prototype Blue', 'Catch Me' and 'Bones'.Smugface reached as far as LA, grabbing the attention of groundbreaking producer John Feldmann (The Used, Story of the Year, Good Charlotte, Goldfinger). The band changed things up once more by completely transforming their sound, image and name. And they signed to Maverick/Warner Bros as City Sleeps. The 13 track record features the newly revamped versions of the Interim Release songs 'Prototype', 'Catch Me' and 'Bones', and of course 'Walkers Ridge'.You can check them out at www.myspace.com/citysleeps
