About Me

I write scripts and write about writing scripts and teach others to write scripts. Most of my credits are in the theatre, and a lot of these are at the Victory Gardens Theatre, a company in Chicago where I have been putting up plays a few seconds short of forever.I also wrote a book called SOMETHING WONDERFUL RIGHT AWAY about Chicago's famous comedy troupe, The Second City. I would guess that more major actors, writers and directors have emerged from Second City than any other company going. And I've written TV (in a variety of genres -- one-hour drama, sitcom, soap opera, TV movies) and music and criticism and interviews and essays. Put a blank space in front of me, and I'll have the urge to fill it with something.I am proud to serve on the Council of the Dramatists Guild.Apart from theatre, film, TV, literature and music, my major interests are history and politics, and a number of my plays engage historical/political subjects, including what is currently my most-produced play, THE VALUE OF NAMES.I enjoy teaching dramatic technique. I've done it a lot in univeristies and professional institutions and also do private consultations.I'm lucky enough to be in a longterm relationship with a kind and lovely lady, and we share our apartment with a small dog. We live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Directors, producers and actors who want to do my scripts. Teachers I can learn from. I'm lucky in that I've interviewed a lot of the people I've wanted to meet, past and present -- Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Richard Rodgers, most of the key figures of the Compass Players and Second City. I also find myself in a community of many American writers and composers I admire by virtue of being active in the Dramatists Guild. There are a few I'd still like to meet and talk with -- Edgar Reitz (the writer-director of the HEIMAT miniseries), Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Ira Glass, Garrison Keillor, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, John Updike, Richard Curtis, Mike Leigh, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Jimmy McGovern, Andy Hamilton ... I very much admire many of the people creating British theatre, film, TV and radio.
