Created in Paris in 2003, during the Sons d’Hiver festival, by four leading voices of funk-jazz-rock-improvised music (Tony Hymas, Jef Lee Johnson, François Corneloup and David King), Ursus Minor is a group acting more like a travelling unit rather than a fixed and monostyle. Ursus Minor (Latin name of the star constellation) suggest in its first record Zugzwang a lucid entry in the 21st century with an approach anchored in current World issues boosted by the lessons of the past. The first album welcomed guests such as Boots Riley (from the Coup), M1 (from Dead Prez), Umi, D’ de Kabal, Spike, Ada Dyer and Jeff Beck. Drummer and singer Stokley Williams got into the mix on May 1st 2005 in the Europa Jazz Festival in Le Mans and became official drummer of the band. Together they toured in France (Paris several times, Luz St Sauveur, Lyon, Avignon, Montluçon, Tours, Langonnet, Lorient, Brest, Nantes, Angers, Sons d’Hiver – another home for the band, Treignac, Uzeste …) and recorded Nucular with Brother Ali as a guest on two tracks. They also composed and performed as a quartet the original soundtrack of Coup de Sang , a film by Jean Marboeuf. After an 18 months eclipse, they are back on stage on May 22nd 2008 at the Triple Rock Social club during the Minnesota sur Seine Festival. for the encore they invite Ekoué and Le Bavar, both MC's of the french rap group La Rumeur. In 2008 after the summer French tour, Jef Lee Johnson leaves the band and in 2009, Mike Scott, known for his work with Prince, Janet Jackson and many others, becomes the new guitarist of Ursus Minor.

Le batteur et chanteur Stokley Williams a rejoint le groupe le premier mai 2005 à l’Europa Jazz Festival du Mans et est devenu son batteur en titre. Ensemble, ils ont tourné en France (Paris plusieurs fois, Luz St Sauveur, Lyon, Avignon, Montluçon, Tours, Langonnet, Lorient, Brest, Nantes, Angers, Sons d’Hiver – lieu d’accueil privilégié, Treignac, Uzeste …) et enregistré Nucular avec Brother Ali invité sur deux morceaux. Avec Ali, ils se sont produits au Triple Rock Social Club de Minneapolis, à Sons d’Hiver, à Jazz à la Villette et au Fine Line de Minneapolis. Ils ont aussi composé et interprété la musique du film Coup de Sang de Jean Marboeuf. Le 22 mai 2008, après une éclipse de 18 mois, il reviennent à la scène au Triple Rock Social Club lors du festival Minnesota sur Seine ou le temps d'un rappel, ils invitent Ekoué et Le Bavar du groupe La Rumeur. En 2008 après la tournée d'été, Jef Lee Johnson quitte le groupe et en 2009, Mike Scott, entendu avec Prince, Janet Jackson et de nombreux autres, devient le nouveau guitariste d'Ursus Minor
