Pilar Montenegro (born Maria Lopez August 1, 1972) is a Mexican singer who began her career as a member of Fresas Con Crema, which was very short lived. In late 1989, Pilar was selected to become a member of Garibaldi to replace Anghel.She soon followed up her Garibaldi days by participating in telenovelas (Spanish for soap opera), such as, among others Volver a empezar; and, in 1996, released her debut solo album, Son Del Corazon, a moderate hit. Her second album, 2001's Desahogo, became her grandest success to date, eclipsing the 2004 release "Pilar" which featured the hit single "Prisionera".Despite that minor bump, 2004 would find Pilar signed by Telemundo to sing the title song in the production El Alma Herida. Montenegro was one of several Telemundo superstars featured at the 2004 Telemundo fan fest at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, alongside Maria Celeste Arraras, Ana Maria Polo, Mauricio Zeilic, Mara Croatto, Mauricio Salas and many others. She returned to the album scene in 2005 with South Beach, a reggaeton album featuring Don Omar, Voltio, and Big Mann. Though her attempt to shake off her pop roots and switch genres failed to find much critical support, it wasn't without precedent: Noelia, another popular musician (and with whom Pilar would soon find herself embroiled in controversy), released her reggaeton album Melao in 2004 to some critical success.
