Elwood Dads' Band

About Me

The Elwood Dads’ Band is one of Melbourne's premier all-ages party bands.
Launched in 2000 to perform at Elwood Primary School fundraisers, The Dads’ Band’s reputation for lifting spirits and getting toes tapping soon spread.
Although the band boasts members from seminal Australian bands such as Hunters and Collectors and TISM, the main drawcard is the repertoire.
The Dads’ Band’s broad range is concentrated on familiar songs from the 1950's to the present.
With the distinctive sound of Jack Howard's trumpet and three lead vocalists, the sound ranges from straightforward R&B through to ska and surf songs to smooth jazz and even disco.
First and foremost, The Dads are a great party band. In 2006, The Dads focused on adding a festive atmosphere to some of Melbourne's major charitable events.
Their continued success means that in 2009, The Dads aim to do more benefit shows funded through corporate appearances and donations. They are also planning a few select public performances to showcase their wares.
Have a listen to the samples on this site: they're rough live recordings but you'll get the picture.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: SEAN KELLY - Guitar and Vocals. Ex TISM guitarist Sean loves the smooth/cheesy songs and chatting up ladies he has absolutely no chance with. Musically he cites Warren Buffet, Stephen Hawkins and Mark Viduka as influences. By day he works in Banking where he names John Lennon and Robbie Williams as his role models. Sean lies most of the time.

GREG MURRAY – Drums. Greg spent the 80’s playing drums behind Melbourne Girlband “The Chantoozies” before abandoning his artistic credibility to play with David Bridie’s “My Friend the Chocolate Cake”. A lecturer in Clinical Psychology by day Greg vigorously denies allegations he gives preferential treatment to students who carry his drum kit to and from shows.

JOHN BERTO – Lead Guitar and Vocals. A seachange in the 70’s & 80’s saw John leave his Italian folk roots in favour of Country & Western roots. He now considers himself blessed to get any roots particularly after his self-medication phase with “The Dead Livers”. A music teacher and session musician, John can’t really understand why any music has been written since the zenith of Rob Jolly’s “Marshall’s Portable Music Machine” in 1972.

JACK HOWARD – Trumpet, Vocals (Percussion / Keys). Jack Howard spent his formative years pursuing various cellists in several orchestras around Melbourne. He then took a huge left turn at Alburquerque and spent the next 20 years playing trumpet with Hunters and Collectors as well as Midnight Oil, The Living End and Pete Murray - not so many cellists on the scene, but still in the pursuit of something. In the last 5 years, he's released 4 CD's of his own original music, including the acclaimed "My Lucky Day". Do you see a commom theme?

ADAM JOHNSTONE – Bass and Vocals (and occasional Trombone). Having played for years in bands no-one has heard of, Adam is the true weekend warrior of The Dads. His legacy of live performance is now urban folklore amongst his peers where he shines as a beacon of excess. The rest of the time he is relatively normal.
