La Joya is located near the site of an ancient Piro Indian Pueblo that the Spanish named Nueva Sevilla, or Sevilleta. During the eighteenth century, this was the southernmost settlement along the Camino Real before travelers entered the despoblado, or uninhabited area, between here and El Paso del Norte. Every fall, caravans assembled here in preparation for this portion of the journey.La Joya is now a little town south of Belen and north of Socorro, its a very small town with less then 150 people located in this town. This town is very fun. La Joya has on church which is catholic. It has a volunteer fire department. Its a nice quiet town for the most part.La Joya's people raise livestock, they farm alfalfa, and also have another job, to help support there farms. We have a hunting place where you can come and hunt bird game at Rancho de La Joya
