L'affiliata Teen Sound Records di Massimo pubblica cinque sette pollici extended playing, che sono autentiche leccornie sixties. Ce n'.. per tutti i gusti. Non per fare delle preferenze, ma un gradino sopra tutto mi sembra il 45 dei Grains di Pordenone, la cui Wait A While dei Remaining Few si inscrive prepotentemente tra i killer folk punk di ogni tempo. Accattivante sin dalla confezione coloratissima, questo album dei The Grains .. uno dei nuovi prodotti di punta per Teen Sound, tanto variegato quanto interessante. I Grains prendono la materia Sixties classica, portando alle luce alcune delle sfaccettature pi.. interessanti del periodo con un piglio, secondo me, contemporaneo e completamente attuale. L'opener "Tell Me Something" chiarisce subito le intenzioni della band, con una strumentazione che parte all'unisono per cavalcare una strofa melodica, molto suggestivo l'impatto dell'organo e il "break" pischedelico nella parte centrale. Pi.. avanti, le mie "attenzioni" non cadute sulla traccia "They've got a gun", che dalle coordinate folk rock originali, si porta su lidi non lontani dai primi Stone Roses (per fare un paragone contemporaneo). I Grains tengono incollato l'ascoltatore con canzoni capaci di varianza di tematiche, di suono e di "trovate", come ad esempio i reversed tapes della stupenda "Just Our Flame", a mio avviso la perla pi.. preziosa dell'album, avvolta da una mistica aura psych. Ce n'.. davvero per tutti i gusti, dalle abrasioni di "Brand New Girl" alle aperture melodiche e pop di "Listen To Me", al garage "tonico" di "It Makes Me Flip" e "If These are Men". Questi sono i tipi di album che io prediligo, fedeli ad una attitudine ma con un "mood" variabile, una sorta di "percorso sonoro" che spinge ad ascolti ripetuti. E questo nuovo Grains vale davvero molti ascolti. Complimenti sinceri alla band, che .. stata in grado di confezionare un album davvero al di sopra della media... quel finale in reverse mi fa impazzire! (fab)_______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ POPISM - 2006 Just Our Flame According to their own origin, this Italian bunch of mop-topped beatsters, usually finds themselves halfway between Euro-freakbeat and a tad rawer American garage punk, throwing around pebbles’n’rubbles’n’grains. Alternatively, with the resulting sound mostly being reminiscent of the Swedish retro-ists such as The Strollers or The Creeps, (Tell Me Something, title song, Not My Fault ...), or in some cases, when the Brit-sound seems a bit more apparent, recalling another group of soulmates, The Embrooks (Brand New Girl, Sofa Tiger). Surprisingly enough, while throwing in some of the Byrdsy 12-string jangle that is sure to make you “feel a whole lot better” in They’ve Got a Gun, they come out sounding not too unlike The Stone Roses, which might be a reference as good as any for Listen To Me too, leaning towards the ‘Roses’ second album’s heavier sound. Considering my only previous encounter with The Grains, through their covers-only 7” debut single, the prevailing of the originals comes as a pleasant surprise. The Grains is one of those legendary band that best represents the term Garage Sound these days,in its authentic meaning. Most of the band members play since the late 80's,the youngest ones play like they've never heard anything but Back From The Grave, Pebbles and Psychedelic Unknowns on the radio. The look of the bands has recently gone a bit freakbeat but their sound is still pure US garage punk-psych. Perfect swirling organ,cristalline guitar riffs, solid rhythm section with the right fills, and authentic mono(tone) vocals,singing about..flipped dreams,being alone in the burning sun,summer,men with guns,love and more...A band that has become a fave o'mine since I managed to see them many years ago, when I've released their debut 45 on Teen Sound (long time sold out..). Today the Grains's sound hasn't changed..they simply sound better than before and the songwriting has given the band their unique touch. If you still like the true garage sound..you'll love the Grains album! The Grains "Just Our Flame" Since early this year, "Just Our Flame" has been a permanent fixture on my CD player. The album runs deep with imagination and ideas. Readings of The Lemon Fog's haunting "Summer" and The Choir's "If These Are Men" suggest The Grains have a preference for obscure sixties nuggets. But their own material is as comparably worthy as the bands they admire and that's what lifts "Just Our Flame" above and beyond the competition. Wired to the rooftops with interesting tempos and catchy hooks, "Tell Me Something," "Sofa Tiger," "Listen To Me" and the title track of the record effectively illustrate the band's forte for combining primal instincts with freaky undercurrents. Peppered with a wailing harmonica, bluesy rhythms and hormone-charged cockiness, "Not My Fault" is a heated garage rock piece, while "It Makes Me Flip" is a frisky dance number. Whirling organs, stinging guitar leads and snarling vocals reign supreme on "Just Our Flame." Awesome, inspiring and bubbling over with tasty tunes, the album is simply outstanding. Fans of The Chocolate Watchband, The Doors and "Younger Than Yesterday" era Byrds are advised to take note. Non vi sembri esagerato il voto cos.. alto (9/10). Un punto in pi.. per difendere un certo orgoglio italiano, e per notare che in casa nostra, quando si tratta di fare certo garage, non abbiamo nulla da invidiare e nessuno. Just Our Flame dei The Grains (band con alle spalle una storia lunga, sconosciuta ma meravigliosa) .. un piccolo gioiello. Rifrazioni Yardbirds (Not My Fault) vibrazioni psycho prog? (il finale ipnotico di Tell Me Something e l'inizio quasi Doorsiano di Just Our Flame), garage d'..lite, gli Animals (Love & More). Da applausi. Non fate che gruppi cos.. si perdano nell'oblio. L'esordio lungo dei Grains arriva a ben cinque anni di distanza dal primo vagito discografico su 7”. Adesso che tutti battono il ferro quando si suppone sia caldo, questa lunga attesa .. gi.. un'ampia garanzia di qualit... L'artwork del digipack, ma soprattutto la serigrafla del CD che ricalca l'inossidabile vinile, non lasciano dubbi circa il background del quintetto veneto: incendiario sixties punk, venato di psichedelia e dal tocco freakbeat. L'ottimo songwriting, l'inappuntabile sezione ritmica, la chitarra che entra e esce nei momenti giusti, l'organo usato con cristallina maestria ed il cantato che sa essere sia suadente (Summer, They've got a gun) che disperato (Brand new girl), fanno di Just Our FIame uno dei dischi garage?psych dell'anno. E non solo nell'accidentato suolo italico. Trentaseiesimo disco nel catalogo della Teen Sound - divisione dedicata alla musica italiana dell'etichetta garage romana Misty Lane - "Just Our Flame" si candida come perfetto e definitivo sussidiario sonoro dell'epopea dei “Nuggets”. Il quintetto pordenonese autore del tutto, The Grains, dimostra uno smisurato amore per quei suoni, cercando di riprodurli con fantastica, e per certi versi maniacale, fedelt..: dal suono delle chitarre - tagliato, acido, pieno di fuzz, tipico di gruppi come Blues Magoos o The Seeds - all'essenzialit.. delle linee di basso, passando per le rullate animalesche di una batteria alla Kingsmen e un cantato sguaiato che diverte e fa molto "Here Are The Sonics".
