Officer Bowens and Officer Jennifer Fettig were shot and killed while making a traffic stop on Gilbert Avenue at 2am. As the two officers called in the license plate information of the vehicle, while sitting in their patrol car, the suspect opened fire with a .40 caliber handgun, striking Officer Bowens and Officer Fettig several times. The suspect then fled the scene as Officer Bowens exited his patrol car and called for assistance.The suspect reappeared and shot Officer Bowens nine times total as he was trying to aid his partner, Officer Fettig. Neither officer had an opportunity to return fire. The suspect fired a total of 22 rounds at the officers during the incident.The suspect fled in his pickup truck, but a portion of the shooting was recorded in the patrol car's camera. The suspect and his brother were arrested several hours later.Both officers were transported to Henry Ford Hospital where Officer Bowens was pronounced dead. Officer Fettig was admitted in extremely critical condition and died from her wounds 12 hours later.Officer Bowens had served with the Detroit Police Department for 3 years and was assigned to the 4th Precinct. The suspect then stole Officer Sawyer's service weapon and fled.Officer Sawyers was transported to St. John Macomb Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the following morning.The suspect's motive in the killing was to acquire a handgun. On July 25, 2004, the suspect was located in Jacksonville, Florida, after being featured on the television show America's Most Wanted. As a SWAT team of local deputies and U.S. marshals stormed the house the suspect committed suicide using Officer Sawyers' stolen service weapon.Officer Sawyers had served with the Sterling Heights Police Department for seven months, and had previously served for three years with the Detroit Police Department. Corporal Makowski was struck once in the face as he took cover behind a neighbor's home. The shooter continued firing towards Corporal Makowski's position, preventing officers from removing him from the location. The shooter was finally shot and killed by an officer armed with a rifle.Corporal Makowski was transported to a local hospital and then flown to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he succumbed to his wound early the following morning.Corporal Makowski had served with the Dearborn Heights Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his son. Officer Scanlon Died Tuesday, February 12, 2002 Officer Scanlon was stabbed to death after making a traffic stop in Redford Township at about 2150 hours. Officer Scanlon was working a traffic detail in the 8th Precinct when he observed a vehicle make an illegal turn onto Six Mile. He followed the vehicle into Redford Township where he initiated a traffic stop on Beech Daly Road. After the vehicle stopped, he removed the driver from the vehicle and began to frisk him.While searching the suspect, the suspect attempted to flee and was tackled by Officer Scanlon. During the ensuing struggle, the suspect stabbed Officer Scanlon in the neck and back nine times. While trying to defend himself, Officer Scanlon shot the suspect in the chest, seriously wounding him. The round also struck Officer Scanlon in the arm. The suspect then stole Officer Scanlon's patrol car and service weapon and drove himself to the hospital, where he was taken into custody. Another person in the suspect's vehicle also fled the scene. The suspect was convicted of murder in September of 2002. Officer Scott Stewart was shot and killed as he placed a suspect under arrest for illegally possessing a handgun.Officer Stewart and his partner were called to the 11200 block of Corbette in the report there was a group of men gambling on the sidewalk. When they arrived, Officer Stewart discovered one man was carrying a concealed handgun. As Officer Stewart was cuffing the suspect, another man approached Officer Stewart from behind and fired one shot at his head. Officer Stewart was rushed to St. John Hospital where he died several hours later from his wound.The suspect fled the scene but turned himself in the following day. The man was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.Officer Stewart was assigned to the 9th Precinct and had been employed with the Detroit Police Department for five years. He is survived by his fiancee, also a Detroit Police Officer, parents, and two sisters.Hazel Park Police Department Michigan End of Watch: Sunday, July 28, 2002 Officer Jessica Nagle-Wilson was shot and killed when she responded to an animal complaint at a house on Jarvis Street at 2048 hours.As she exited her patrol car, a man standing on the porch suddenly opened fire on her with a shotgun filled with No. 6 birdshot, striking her in the face, neck, and stomach. She was able to return fire and wounded the suspect. Although she was wearing her vest she suffered fatal wounds and succumbed to her wounds at the hospital.The suspect was taken into custody at the hospital. The man was convicted of Officer Nagle-Wilson's murder in July 2003 and sentenced to life in prison.Officer Nagle-Wilson had been a member of the Hazel Park Police Department for just under two years, and is survived by her husband, who is also a police officer, parents, brother, and sister.
