Biography: It was the year of 1999- the apocalyptic year, as many called it when in Castelo Branco (Portugal) purple angel first appeared. Having early renounced the statute of an intervention band, the band wishes to perform its art, which anyone will decipher as it pleases. This way the band’s aim is to follow the paths to the new melody.
Having been born in a city where the new melody’s not always welcome – or at least not listened properly- the band soon characterized itself as owning a sound that combines melodic and heavier sounds, sweetened by the inclusion of portuguese traditional instruments (mandolin and the portuguese guitar) a fact that can be confirmed in the début EP.
However, this triumph took some time to be conquered, once that since its origin, the band has suffered the inevitable structure changes that affect the majority of the Portuguese bands.
The original formation of purple angel was composed by: Piranha (drums); Zé Curral (guitar); Paulo Moreira (bass) and Emanuel Nunes (current vocalist of Izumi band). After some changes the band is finally consolidated with the entry of drummer Miguel Rijo (ex-Turnail/Solar), the guitarist Bernardo Amaro (Vai Tu & Os Amigos Do Além/Crime Loucura) and vocalist Marisa Manteigas.
It’s with this formation that the band began to give concerts in 2001. In March of the same year they participated in the ‘1º Festival de Música Moderna da Beira Interior’ (1st Modern Music Festival) and came out third place. This took them to the ‘Semana Académica’ of Covilhã to perform in the same stage of Jorge Palma and Cebola Mol. With the arrival of the ‘Semanas Académicas’ (famous university students festivals in Portugal) in May, purple angel performed in Guarda together with Despe&Siga.
In 2002 they have participated in the ‘2º Festival de Música Moderna da Beira Interior’ (Guarda), performed at ‘Escola Superior de Educação de Castelo Branco’ and at the Carnival Concert in the CCB (Clube de Castelo Branco). At the same time they went on a mini-tour through out several portuguese villages. In July they performed in ‘Taska da Ti Lurdes’ in CB. However the most ridiculous concert the band has ever performed in CB was on the 29th June in the Portuguese Communist Party. Shortly after 6 pm a neighbour, disturbed by the noise of purple angel’s ‘new melody’ called the police. The result: the uniformed gentlemen came and…end of concert. That afternoon to those who were foreigners, you could only say: Welcome to Castelo Branco!
In 2002 another element joins the band, Pavick on the flute, and in the following year more concerts take place…
Owning of a healthy sense of humour and good spirits, the band likes to catalogue its music as being ‘buémetal’ (bué= portuguese recent word for ‘a lot’). This way buémetal is what you can expect, as last December 2003 the band recorded the so desired début EP with the producer Nuno Loureiro- well known guru of the portuguese metal scene and vocalist of Painstruck’s portuguese band.
In April 2004 the band made the concert to present the EP ‘Try…’ at the ‘Cine Teatro de Castelo Branco’. Since that time they have been performing in several cities. Until new projects they’ll continue to find the new melody and to perform their art.
