About Me

THE BRIGHTEST SMILE A DEDICATION TO BELOVED 944 FRIEND REMY BOOTHE, FEBRUARY 10, 1983 – JANUARY 1, 2007
By Sarah Daoust January 29, 2007
We should all be so lucky to have one person in our life whose smile alone could instantly brighten our day and lift our spirits. Remy Boothe was that person to the 26 close-knit staff members of BASIC Urban Kitchen & Bar in East Village, and to countless patrons, friends and family members.
“Remy would never walk into BASIC without a smile on his face,” recalls close friend and co-worker Erin Gioka. “Customers would come in and ask for him ... He was such an all-around good, positive, sincere guy. If you were in a sad mood, he always knew how to pick you up. Remy just made people feel good.”
On the evening of January 1, the 23-year-old bartender’s life was tragically cut short after he was struck by a car. The following morning, BASIC owner Jon Mangini got the call and contacted the rest of the staff, many of whom had just worked with Boothe on New Year’s Eve and celebrated the holiday with him.
“Later that day we coincidently all wound up at BASIC,” says Mangini. “The staff here is such a family ... Suddenly a devastating, shocking tragedy comes along and there’s no book or protocol for how to act or what to do. Most of us have never lost someone this close to us and at such a young age. We all just knew we wanted to be here for each other. Nobody wanted to be at home that day.”
Employees say Boothe contributed in more ways than just bartending. “He started working here when BASIC first opened last spring,” says Mangini. “Remy was dependable, always upbeat, and he always looked after people. If you had a problem, Remy wanted to know how he could help. If a customer needed a taxi at the end of the night, he would make sure they were taken care of. That’s just who he was.”
Boothe was close with all the staff at BASIC, but regularly worked closely with Gioka and fellow bartenders Erin Kelly, Trent McDowell and Shawn Slyvester. “We worked five days a week together and we were family,” says Kelly. “I remember last Halloween, everyone dressed up at work. All the girls dressed up as school girls, and all the guys were supposed to dress up as nerds. But Remy was the only guy who dressed up! He threw himself into the role — even down to the thick glasses taped together. He went to four stores to get the costume together! That’s the kind of guy Remy was; he threw himself into everything he did.”
Besides being a caring, charismatic co-worker and friend, Boothe was many other things. He loved to sail and even had his own sailboat docked at Mission Bay. He loved to snowboard; his passion for it originating in Colorado where he grew up (and where he first met Mangini at age 14). He was an artist who transformed wood-framed mirrors into breathtaking, one-of-a-kind art pieces. He had a dearly loved cat named Whiskey who lived with him in his North Park apartment, which he proudly renovated himself. He made a mean cheesecake. He loved to barbecue. He had dreams of opening his own club one day. He was a devoted son, grandson and brother.
And he had a smile that lit up a room and will forever be missed.

Remy Boothe Dies in California
Twenty-three-year-old Remy Kitaj Boothe died after being struck by a car on a Southern California highway January 1.Boothe, a San Diego resident, was walking in a lane of Interstate 5, near Mission Beach, when he was struck by an 2000 Isuzu Rodeo at approximately 7:30 p.m. According to California State Highway Patrol, Boothe was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver told officers he did not see Boothe, who had his back to traffic, and was wearing dark clothing.“I am a strong believer that everything in life happens for a reason,” Boothe wrote to close friend Heather Favata late last year, “and it’s by that philosophy that a lot of the best things in my life have come. They say every cloud has a silver lining, and without that silver lining, we would have nothing to look forward to. I know that it’s no fun losing someone that you love, and it takes time to get over, but you have to do your best to keep a positive outlook on life. If you’re not positive, then you will be blind to opportunities that come your way.”Boothe, who grew up in Telluride, is survived by his mother, Tina, and his siblings, Bobby Boothe and SaSaDi Odunsi. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 6, in San Diego; Boothe’s family plans to hold a memorial service in Telluride sometime next month.
