Lead singer Diego Garcia, guitarist Mod, drummer Kevin McAdams, and bassist Jeffrey James Berrall have united to raise the local standard and create a singular audio-beast... the Elefant. The band was assembled over the past year combining the unique experiences of the four compelling musicians with a common lust for making music identifiably their own. Melding elements of David Bowie’s Berlin-era with the driving intensity of early U2 and the pop sensibility of Blur, Elefant ricochets through this variety of influences at a feverish pace. With the release of the their stunning debut EP, Gallery Girl (Kemado Records/Palm Pictures), New York City’s Elefant have taken their first giant step forward in creating a sound that captures and holds hostage imagination and expectation. Recorded during an inspired and experimental weekend session during the spring of 2002, Gallery Girl is a glimpse at the deep potential but remarkably polished sound of a band clearly on the brink. The EP is an assault of driving beats, pulsing rhythms and surgical guitars, enlightened by Diego’s distinct vocal intimacy. Chants of lust, love and anger linger, while Gallery Girl’s stinging guitars, marching drums and cooling rhythms lead confidently toward endless possibilities and long-lasting impressions. Undeniably, Elefant have created an aggressive and daring sound that’s impossible to shake.Following the recording of Gallery Girl, Elefant honed their musical vision with a series of live shows throughout the summer and fall and headed into the studio to record their debut full-length, Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid.
