About Me
... pianist and composer, also attracted to playing all kinds of rhythm instruments... with a musical education in jazz and classical.. an improviser who uses and is inspired by all kinds of genres.. Started early with playing around on the piano, gradually connecting with yet other genres and instruments... studied tablas in India 1997-1999, on three different occasions..Currently finishing a PhD in History of Religions at Stockholm University, and frequently giving lectures on Yoga philosophy and history. Does the research in Yoga resonate with working and teaching music, especially concerning the intricacies and complexities of emotion, body, and presence?! Maybe so.. Lately, Performance Studies has appeared as a way of bridging the academic and artistic.. spanning from art, drama and ritual theory to cultural studies and anthropology.. And also Gilles Deleuze, the French avant-garde philosopher, whose thoughts on philosophy and art always enable us to create continuously new connections, between these lines and everywhere else..Over the years I have played in many different constellations, with among others Raymond Strid, Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, William Parker, Alberto Pinton, Jon Fält, Martin Kuechen, Lennart Ã…berg, Gerry Hemingway, Palle Danielsson, Nils Landgren, etc. Also giving solo concerts whenever possible.Received an award in 1996, from the Swedish Academy of Jazz, with the motivation: "for having developed, with great integrity and consistency, a peculiar and exciting musical world that eludes categorization". In a review of the CD Fancy Machine from 1999 (Dragon DRCD 324) it said: â€For all the imaginal breadth and musical resource of Klas Nevrin’s unusual, intriguing quartet … it..s the spirit, or the poetics, of cool which informs much of this quietly energizing music. … Featuring mature, accomplished playing from all participants, this is a rewarding record†(Jazz Journal, 1/11 2000)....At the moment I primarily work with YUN KAN 5 , and YUN KAN 10, two fantastic groups with great musicians, led by saxophonist Fredrik Ljungkvist. The quintet released the CD Yun Kan 12345 and made a â€Jazz in Swedenâ€-tour (from the prestigeous Swedish Jazz Award) in 2004, which also included concerts in Kongsberg, London, Beijing and Shanghai. In the year 2005 we toured Slovenia and France, and the group was also chosen â€Jazz Group of the Year†by the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. Our second album Badaling was released January 2007. I also compose, and collaborate with vocalist Erika Alexandersson, only original songs, but lots of improvisation too.. Pop? Jazz? Freedom? Who knows..! CASUAL INTIMACY is a duo with bansuri-flute player Richard Ekre-Suzzi, an inspiring and fulfilling project that goes back 20 years, or more... Flavours of India, no doubt, but tensions with the piano creates something new, too. A more recent project is THIRD STREAM , a trio with vocalist Lina Nyberg and Fredrik Ljungkvist on clarinet. We reinterpret OLD jazzstandards, from the early 20th century.. Inspired by the Third Stream movement in the 50's (like Ran Blake, Jimmy Giuffre, Jeanne Lee, George Russel, etc.) we want to honor their importance to the development of jazz, and to let ourselves be similarly inspired by their combining of jazz with the contemporary, of improvisation with the precomposed..
