PAULA BOGGS

...I fear I'll hear I'm clear out of time.

About Me

Life is a sine curve. I started playing guitar and writing music at age 11. During my teens and into my 20s, music was emotional glue for me. Then, like perhaps too many people, I let life get in the way...too busy. With undying encouragement from a loved one, I got back in the saddle. Though I took a long break, it's great to be composing and performing again. I completed the University of Washington's Songwriters Certificate Program in 2006 and started doing open mics in the Seattle area in January 2007. The open mic is a unique venue. You never know what you'll see and hear. I've grown as a performer and I've met a lot of cool and talented people along the way. A while ago, someone in the audience told me my music kept him off balance as he absorbed the tension I create through strong voice and strumming but highly vulnerable lyrics. I was moved by the observation and am curious if you see that too.Says former Picketts frontwoman and veteran singer-songwriter Christy McWilson, "with a gift for melody and orginal, intelligent lyrics, the unique and authentic voice of singer-songwriter Paula Boggs makes for a compelling performance experience."With luck and focus, I'll produce my first EP sometime soon. Over the past several months I've teamed with some amazing musicians, including conga drummer Tor Dietrichson and bassist Brian Miller plus his band Randomcode. And I just started partnering with a true genius drummer and life spirit named Simone LaDrumma. You can hear their genius on most of the tracks I've posted on this site. When I'm not in Seattle, I usually hang out in Santa Fe or on Vashon Island's Magnolia Beach...both truly spiritual places.

Band Members: Paula Boggs (vocals, guitar) Brian Miller (bass, synthesizer) Tor Dietrichson (conga drums) Simone LaDrumma (conga drums) John Steimert (keyboards) Gee Emerick (guitar) Sandy Greenbaum (drums)
Influences: I'm inspired by those who touch us with the sheer brilliance, irony, comedy or pathos of songwriting at its finest. I love the unpredictable and there's no substitute for a voice (vocal or instrumental) that uniquely pierces the soul. And thus, among those I admire are Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Nina Simone, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Merl Saunders, Richie Havens, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, Emerson Lake & Palmer, the Byrds, Pink Floyd, Robert Cray, Richard Thompson, Yes, Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane, The Police, Haydn, Puccini, Joseph Arthur, Sufjan Stevens, Conor Oberst, R.E.M., Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Jaco Pastorius, PJ Harvey, Citizen Cope, Mos Def, Blue Scholars, Wyclef Jean, Bjork, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson & Willie Nelson.Buddha State of Mind

Sounds Like: Folks tell me I remind them of Odessa, Joan Armatrading, Mary Fahl, Annie Lennox or Tracy Chapman. I certainly share a cello tone and the emotion in my voice may evoke comparisons with these singers. I also aspire to capture a bit of the spirit that is uniquely Robert Plant. At the end though, you the listener must decide!
