"Open your heart and let her step in!"Terry David Mulligan, CKUA Radio
"Lischka has the rare ability to convey an emotion and a sense of place in the same sonic syllable. Back Porch Light glows with goodness."
Cam Fuller, Star Phoenix
"A voice as big as the prairies itself."
Tom Wilson, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings
"It's not easy to set poetry to music, but you've done wonders here. You are a genuine artist."
Charles Simic, Poet Laureate of the U.S. Library of Congress
Ten years after her critically acclaimed debut Leaving for Omaha (you won't believe me) Nicol Lischka is back with her sophomore release. Having spent her days fulfilling obligations of domesticity and academia while sneaking in songs on scrap papers and midnights on the back porch, Nicol has lived the life of a true artist. Back Porch Light comes, in part, as a result of her receiving a $10,000 recording grant from a local radio station. Produced by Juno-award winning artist Jason Plumb (The Waltons), Back Porch Light resonates with that summer's intense and intriguing collaborations. From the gritty alchemy of "Half-dead Flies," to the sultry love song for a Saskatchewan farmer, "I Wanna," to the moonlit and enigmatic "Stone," a fate-twisted collaboration with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic, the songs on Back Porch Light sweep you into beguiling places.
Nicol says "this CD is a testament to the power of committing yourself to your wildest dreams, however unrealistic they may seem initially - you eventually grow into them. And when you get tired and lose hope, as we all do sometimes. . . friends, strangers, people, angels just kinda show up and help out when you least expect it."
Back Porch Light is the follow-up to Lischka's critically acclaimed Leaving for Omaha. Over a two-year span she hit the road and embraced the serendipitous--support from PromoFact, VideoFact, FACTOR, nominations for two Prairie Music Awards, a Saskatchewan Showcase Award, and a performance at Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair in Edmonton. Now, Back Porch Light rides the swell of renewed interest in this intense and literate songwriter who goes straight for the heart.
Back Porch Light features Jason Plumb on electric guitar, mandolin, harmonica & banjo, Gord Smith on bass, Mike Thompson on drums, Jeff McLeod keys & accordion and Scott Patrick on electric."
