This is a fan page about The Tripods. The Tripods are a trilogy of novels by John Christopher (a pen name for Samuel Youd) that were published in the 1960's. There are three books in the trilogy consisting of: The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire. The books tell of a post apoclayptic earth in which mankind has been enslaved and subjugated by aliens from another world. These aliens traverse the land in three legged machines known as Tripods. John Christopher later wrote a prequel entitled When the Tripods Came in 1988. In the mid 1980's, Richard Bates, who went on to produce the series and the BBC attempted to turn the books into a long running television series. The first two books were adapted, filmed. and broadcast in Europe and later in the United States. The first series based on The White Mountains, featured 13 twenty five minute episodes. The second series based on The City of Gold and Lead, consisted of 12 episodes. The series was cancelled shortly after, and the third and final series was never completed. As of recently however, there is some renewed interest in the Tripods. Disney, who has had the rights to John Christophers trilogy since 1997, are interested in making a feature film. The proposed movie has been going through various rewrites over the last few years. It was reported last year that Gregor Jordan will direct this film for Disney's Touchstone Pictures label. However in early 2009 director Alex Proyas is reportedly attached to the project. A year or so ago, BBC4 aired a retrospective/documentry on the Tripods as part of their "The Cult Of" series. In March of 2009, 2/entertain released series one and two in a DVD box set along with a few extra's. This is the first time series two has been officially released. There are quite a few other Tripod related fansites on the net with much more detailed information. This page is simply here to inform and perhaps attract new fans to the books and television series. I shall post some links and update this page with news and information about the Tripods when I can. I also welcome any feedback, comments, and friend requests from anyone who has an appreciation for the Tripods.
