The Queeweed. A one-man band. Circa 1987–1993.
The Queeweed - what does it mean? The word is simply a combination of the words Queer and Seaweed. Queer was the original name of the band. Seaweed (later known as Spjuver Derivata ) was my friends’ band and we did many collaborations together over the years.
Queer released a number of cassettes and participated on some cassette tape compilations. The early recordings were made using an overdub technique involving multiple tape recorders. Sound quality was bad. The sound was industrial/electronic and inspired by bands like à ;GRUMH... and Einstürzende Neubauten.
Later recordings, under the name of The Queeweed, were made on the 4-channel Tascam Porta-One tape recorder and the sound evolved into the sort of drum-machine-powered guitar music which can be heard here. The main source of inspiration was now Big Black.
The drum machines used was mainly the Casio RZ-1 and the Boss DR-220. The Yamaha CS-10 analogue synthesiser provided interesting keyboard and drum-machine-triggered sounds. Most gear were routed through the Yamaha REX-50 effect box. A crappy electric guitar and a fuzz wah pedal completed the outfit.
In 1989 The Queeweed got some radio play on Swedish national radio, which lead to the release of a vinyl 7" on Big Brothel Condominium in 1990. Over the next years, the band participated on a few compilation vinyl LP’s before finally releasing the cassette "Finest Queeweed Blend" in 1993. Hey, some of The Queeweed's releases are actually still available from Börft Records !
