Baxter were formed in the winter of 2006 in South London by Scott MacRae and David Harris. Ignoring the trends of London’s indie scenesters Baxter drew on their diverse influences of early 70's rock and 90s Americana to create a sound instantly recognisable as their own.
Frontman Jamie Tinkler joined the band after splitting from the group Avenue and had enjoyed several top twenty singles within previous groups. Scott had moved to London after the demise of his band Girl Said No ,the highly acclaimed Scottish band who had just begun to enjoy mainstream success before splitting. David Harris had previously been the drummer with Kiwi retro rockers Revolver leaving for London after the release of the award winning album "Parlour Games". The line up was completed by Jenny Kumaran, former keys player with The Requiems and Dean Meekings on Bass.
2008 was spent gigging, writing and recording. This seen the band play and headline some of London’s top venues including The Dublin Castle, Half Moon, Purple Turtle, Dirty South, The Marquee, the Clapham Grand, Punk, Metro, the 100 Club and The Astoria as well as touring extensively through Scotland. The band quickly gained a reputation for enigmatic live shows, earning them a nomination as Best Indie Band at the INDY MUSIC AWARDS 2008.
