Miss Michaela fell in love with dance music in 1995 and has never looked back. For more than 10 years, this versatile DJ/producer has blended classically trained musicianship with edgy, electronic experimentation in the genres of house, techno, drum and bass and downtempo. Born and raised in suburban Kansas City, Mo., as Michaela White, she has since moved east to Chicago and established herself as one of the Midwest’s premiere live DJs and polished producers.
Michaela’s musical roots reach back to age 7, when she began studying classical piano and musical theory. By age 9, she was fluently playing the violin, and quickly taught herself to play viola, cello, bass clarinet, guitar and drums. Blessed with a natural knack for musicianship, Michaela sought to master her next musical medium—turntablism. “I feel that turntables are just another platform for musical expression,” she says. “I taught myself how to beat match, and things just began to flow.”
This musical flow landed her residencies at KC venues including The Hurricane, The Empire Room, Spark Bar and Pure Lounge. Here, she explored her eclectic interests in house music and mixed live sets that included everything from deep, jazzy cuts to trackier, harder records. By the time she moved to Chicago in fall 2003, Miss Michaela was masterfully blending all sub-genres of house, including disco classics and acid tracks.
Her diverse background and driving sound led her to play alongside an equally diverse list of DJs, such as Carl Cox, The Orb, Tony Humphries, Josh Wink, Colette, Miles Maeda, Mark Grant, Wally Callerio, Mazi, and Justin Long, to name a few. She has graced the decks at the following Chicago hotspots: Smart Bar, Zentra, Boom Boom Room @ Green Dolphin Street, Streetside Cafe, Moonshine, Lava Lounge, Vision, Deja Vu, Funky Buddha Lounge, The Abbey Pub, among many others...
In addition to an accomplished performance record, Miss Michaela’s talents have garnered national, critical acclaim. In 2002, she was selected to compose the score for the Coterie Theatre’s production of “Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Piñata Woman and Other Superhero Girls Like Me.” Drawing from the play’s Latin-themed influences of spoken-word poetry, Michaela crafted a sensual score she mixed live on stage. Her 2003 mix C.D. “Infusion” also landed on the pages of URB magazine’s “Mix-it” section (July 2003) to critical praise. Michaela’s diverse musical talents have taken her across the globe to Seoul, South Korea, where she performed a mini-tour at the prestigious venues of Club Tool and Club Cod in summer 2004.
Miss Michaela’s deep musical background also landed her a position with the Chicago Chapter of the Grammy-producing National Recording Academy of Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in early 2006. She has several original remixes slated for release in early 2007, including a project with Jared Wheeler.
“I am heavily influenced by the Chicago house sound, but I draw inspiration from everything I hear,” she says.
