You could pick from any one of the following scenarios; Tiesto starting his midnight set off with it in front of 8000 fans at Gods Kitchens Global Gathering, Sasha coming to the close of another marathon sold out show with it, Dave Seaman dropping it mid set to 6000 adoring fans in Greece, or Matthew himself playing it the length and breadth of the global clubbing world. So what is it? The track in question? It could be one of many Matthew Dekay productions. Maybe Intergalactic the Dekay meets The Beastie Boys Bootleg, or Higher Thoughts the sublime string laden melodic summer anthem, or even Space Mountain Tablet the driving progressive trancer that sits equally at home at Gods Kitchens and Renaissances dance floors. Whichever one you choose, the fact remains that Matthew Dekay has arrived as one of the fastest rising DJ/ Producer talents of recent times. As a DJ, his appearances have quickly built up a loyal following wherever he goes. He developed his sound while playing extended sets at an early residency at esteemed Stalker club in his hometown of Haarlem, Holland. He has gone on to become not only a headline name in his native land with regular appearances for Dance Valley and Extrema, but now across Europe, developing his profile as one of the most in demand DJs on the circuit. As of recently, Matthews appearances have been restricted exclusively to Europe. However debut tours are in place for late 2004 for Australia, Asia and South/ Central America before heading to the U.S in early 2005.
From his close relationship with the Extrema festival organization in Holland, he has released 2 mix compilations, firstly Time to Think serving as the official soundtrack to the Outdoor festival in 2003, and this year contributing an exclusive mix to the double CD/ DVD package. He is also currently working on an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, due for broadcast in autumn. As a child, Matthew was classically trained, and following a brief, yet very successful period in Dutch pop during the late nineties, Matthew moved into more underground musical circles. Over a period of the next five years he slowly developed his craft in dance music. Early releases on One Star recordings caught the eye, before a steady buzz grew from his various releases on Combines Forces and then Deep Records. The concentration was always on developing his sound through original releases, and with over 30 to his name, it seems the choice has paid off. With fans ranging from Deep Dish to Victor Calderone to The Neptunes, and in a time of need to genre define everything in the dance music world; Matthew Dekay sits alone, developing a sound that is unmatched. If there was such a need to characterize it, the closest match to identify Matthews sound was the invention of the term Trouce. A reference to house beats matching trancey rhythms, creating a sound that sits happily at both ends of the clubbing spectrum.
It was with stand out tracks such as Passion and the aptly named Beautiful Monday that the international DJ cognoscenti started to pick up on Matthew, with Danny Howells and Sander Kleinenberg in particular heavily supporting the tracks, and thus licenses to various compilations followed, with Kleinenberg signing Matthew to a singles deal, of which the first fruits Higher Thoughts soon became a massive early summer club anthem.
The record was the first from The Matthew Dekay Band. The band was set up to develop Matthews sound to enable it to be heard by a larger audience. The band has performed at various Dutch festivals and the Zurich Love Parade. While the project is still in its infancy, there are plans to develop the concept and tour behind an album in the future.
During the success of Higher Thoughts, DK records was set up as an outlet for Matthews A&R skills. Matthew spearheaded the label with the double A sided debut release Gods Answer and Behind Secret Borders. The follow up, Perasma Swing 2 Harmony received Essential New Tune status from Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1, and with remixes from Matthew; the single is now due for chart success with a release on Ministry of Sound's Data label the UK, and Ultra in the U.S. He will also be delivering a new 4 track EP before the end of the year. And it looks like the guy only just got started.
