Starting in the depths of rural Maryland and landing in Richmond, Virginia comes GHOSTDANCE, the brainchild of J.B. Beverley. (Beverley is most known for his bands the Wayward Drifters and the Little White Pills.) Having established himself in country blues and the rock and roll underground, Beverley lets his respect for hard rock / metal show in this new project.
Ghostdance is an unrelenting, sonic experience. The demo featured Beverley's multi-instrumental talents along with appearances by friends Darren Waters (The Little White Pills), Dave Sherman (Earthride, Wretched, Spirit Caravan), Mark White Cloud, and the one and only Bobby Liebling of Pentagram. Late in 2008 Beverley and Waters began tracking the debut studio effort "Hehaka Sapa" ("Black Elk" in the Lakota language). From start to finish the album is based on Black Elk's Vision, a theme that Beverley has been fascinated with for many years. J.B. explained the idea behind the band:
"Years ago I was in out in South Dakota on the way to visit some family just outside Pine Ridge. My travels took me through Wounded Knee, and after only one visit there I wound up filling a notebook with poetry. Soon after, I re-read Black Elk Speaks and the Sacred Pipe. It was around that time that I had a dream about turning my Black Elk inspired poetry into music. But the music didn't sound like the Wayward Drifters or the Little White Pills, so I had to come up with a new concept all together. The only kind of music that I have always liked but never had the chance to play in a band is the classic rock / early heavy metal stuff that I have always loved. Having the songs and not the band helped me get my chops up on not only the guitar, but the bass and drums as well. It has been a thoroughly amazing experience so far."
Inspired in part by his ties to Native America, and in part by his love of classic rock and early heavy metal, Beverley has made GHOSTDANCE the place where Black Elk meets Black Sabbath. - Todd Boughs
