WHAT IS DRUIDRY?
Druidry is an earth based spiritual path; in other words it is a practical and spiritual system that exists to help each individual to understand their own spirituality and connection to the Creator/Universe/God/Goddess. Druidry is essentially a Solar path, a path that helps us to understand our deep connection to the spiritual sun that is our soul. However, it is important to understand that this does not exclude a connection to the Earth, Moon, Stars or the feminine. Many people have seen Druidry as being a God orientated, masculine tradition where men have held leading roles and women have not been allowed to join or have an equal voice. This is far from the truth as you will see as you begin working within Druidry. Men and women are equal, just as with the God and Goddess.
Druidry teaches us the interconnectedness of all things, that there is no separation between each individual, or between Humanity and nature. As such, through the training we are proposing to offer, you will begin to understand and see the links between us and the Earth, the Moon and stars, the realms of animals and plants and trees. Druidry can guide us to understand how to communicate with the natural world and so also communicate to the spiritual realm and the divine essence of the Gods and the Creator that exists in all things.
Druidry is not a religion, there is no dogma and no right or wrong way to work, as long as all that is done is for the benefit of all beings. Within Druidry we respect life as being sacred, so causing pain or suffering to another living being is not acceptable. Within the Order there is no Master or guru leading us all to salvation. We are all equal and so do not have to bow down at the feet of some great enlightened human offering us wisdom. Druidry is a path of personal service and training to gain insight into the physical and spiritual world where we are responsible for our actions. Druidry can be experienced in many ways and whilst here in the Order we will be offering training and advice, each member is encouraged to begin their own personal quest for knowledge, for understanding and through that gain wisdom that is personal to them.
As you work through each lesson there will be key elements offered for consideration and practice, but it is not possible for us to offer training in every physical and spiritual aspect that can become Druidry. As a Druid, your day to day life becomes what Druidry means to you, every action and decision represents your understanding of Druidry to those around you and the world we live in. As such, this can be a great responsibility, but with the freedom to allow your inner being to shine brightly you can, with time and work, become your spiritual self, in this world as well as the realms of higher consciousness.
Walking the Druid path, one of the strongest ways to understand our link with the world of nature, with the Earth, Sun, Moon and stars, with the five elements and with the Spirit, is to actively participate in honouring and celebrating the eight traditional festivals that take place every year. These festivals occur every 6 to 8 weeks and bring together a strong link between the mundane physical world and the world of Spirit. (Please see the blog detailing the 8 festivals which make up the Wheel of the Year.
By recognizing the Wheel of the Year and standing in ritual, either alone or within a grove, we are offering our love, friendship, honour and service to the Gods and the Creator. We are establishing a strong link between ourselves and the elements and guides and guardians, and can experience the direct link that joins us all as spiritual beings.
It is important to remember that the Druidry being offered today is our modern understanding of the spirituality of our Ancestors. There is no way we could, in the early years of the 21st century, emulate or live directly as our Ancestors once did. The wheel has turned, time moves on and our society today is very different to that time when Druidry flourished in Britain.
As such it is not possible to live by the same rules, follow the same practices or to have been brought up within that same socio-spiritual tradition. For many of us, the steps we take on the path of Druidry will seem familiar, almost a half remembered dream we might have once had. For others the concepts, ideas and ways of working will be new and different. Regardless of why you are reading these words now, remember that had you not been called to Druidry you wouldn’t be looking at this MySpace page.
Much of the information and practices carried out by our Ancestors as they followed their Druidry has been lost to us. Originally Druidry was an oral tradition and in many parts it was expected to take up to 21 years to become fully initiated. These days it is not necessary to remember everything and not write anything down. And so the Druid path we walk today has changed and altered, having been pieced together from the hidden traditions and secret knowledge passed down through the centuries as Druidry adapted to the changing centuries and cultures.
The Order does not claim to be able to offer a pure form of Druidry that was practiced over two thousand years ago because this just isn’t possible. However, what we propose to offer is a modern understanding of Druidry based upon the growing and dynamic spirituality of these lands of Britain and Ireland.
The training we propose to offer to you should be carried out alone, and for this reason we ask that all information held within each lesson is kept private to members of the Order. This isn’t done out of a need for secrecy but rather a way to honour the sacredness of your own spiritual journey. Any equipment needed, such as candles, incense, etc., will be listed and some additional tools and items will be sent to you with that months training package.
We would also suggest that as you begin understanding your connection to the natural world and the world of Spirit, you may like to begin looking at your local area to see what beauty lies close to you. Whether you live in a small rural village or in a tower block in the heart of a city, there will be a link to the natural world close at hand. Whether it’s a large and mighty Oak or just a small area of grass and a few flowers, it is important to begin to recognise the local resources closest to you. As we head through the early stages of the 21st Century, it has become all too clear that our societies have become almost alienated to the world of nature. Humanity has become a race where all is consumed and destroyed rather than a race that lives in harmony with the species that share our home and honour the Earth Mother.
Druidry offers each one of us the chance to re-connect to nature and the divine essence that exists around us. By doing so, we can understand just how much work there is to do in order to heal the pain we have caused to the Earth.
