You know the names, Nelly, Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan and Slo Down. You know the groundbreaking group they formed, the St. Lunatics. But the name that is less known, may be the most important name of all – Tony “T-Luv†Davis.
As manager of Nelly and of the St. Lunatics, Mr. Davis is the man who, from Day One, helped guide the careers of the men who altered hip hop and, along the way made music history.
Although the first meeting in 1993 between the record setting artist, Nelly and Mr. Davis may have seemed innocuous, it would prove to change the course of music and help establish St. Louis as a vital entertainment resource. Ever the organizer, as soon as the St. Lunatics formed, Mr. Davis was asked to handle the business dealings of the group. And despite the fact that Mr. Davis had no formal training in management, it became quickly recognizable that here was a powerful force with which to be reckoned.
Mr. Davis is largely responsible for negotiating the innovative record deal that would lead to Nelly selling more than 30 million records worldwide. A deal that also included provisions for other members of the St. Lunatics to release both group and solo projects that went on to sell millions more records.
“I talk to everyone in Nelly's life every day,†says Mr. Davis. “I talk with the lawyers about whatever deals we have on the table, strategizing new opportunities and new ways to enhance our financial portfolios. I communicate with the record label. I talk to the publicists about personal appearances and media relations and I talk to agents about possibilities in the film world.â€
Always thinking in terms of not just today, but tomorrow, next year and beyond, Mr. Davis recognized other opportunities for his superstar client, Nelly. In 2002, Mr. Davis negotiated a deal for Nelly to star in the independent film, “Snipes†knowing that the role would prepare his client for future film roles including the high-grossing film, “The Longest Yard.†Mr. Davis is also producing a reality series with Nelly and other members of the St. Lunatics.
Mr. Davis is actively involved in the management of several other recording artists and producers with his company, the Tony Davis Entertainment Group.
In December of 2006, Mr. Davis is awarded the St. Louis Sentinel newspaper’s “Businessman of the Year.â€
Mr. Davis is a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Gabrielle, and caring father to his four sons, Kevon, Cameron, Titus and Tony, Jr.
